I'm applying for my nominations right now and my congressional representative requires an essay of why I want to attend a service academy. Is it ok if I include a short personal story and use that to carry across my point.

Whatever communicates why you want to go to a service academy works. A personal story is a good way.

@thebluffs - My suggestion would be drill down to a specific moment that you are talking about. Narrowing it down to a specific incident that showcases your desire to serve and what motivates it will allow you to showcase your strengths effectively. Broad generalizations or skipping across more than one story lessens the impact. I would also suggest breaking the story into paragraphs and having a specific intent for each paragraph. This will help you edit for maximum impact. Hope this is helpful. Best of luck to you.

If telling a personal story answers the question, then by all means go that direction. But make sure that your answer isn't just your story that never really explains whey you want to attend a service academy.
