Cruising for Fun, Not War

Haha and after that post a Norwegian email shows up!

I hate how they spy on me for ad targeting. It happens all the time. Call someone and start talking about cruises. Watch how cruises pop up on Facebook all of a sudden.

We just got back Sunday from a week on a Holland America cruise and while I don't think that we were full, we did have plenty of folks aboard. We were part of a group of over 30 USNA classmates plus wives so 60-ish folks and it was nice to be able to do your own thing but also find friends when you were at music venues, the pool, etc.
Holland America does not seem to target youth but there were young families and 20-somethings aboard.

Sad to read. It is indeed a humanitarian issue. While I understand the rationale, I hate seeing the whiff of “what’s mine is mine, foreigners or non-Floridians stay away, go be sick elsewhere.”

We are fairly sure our June AK-Canada Cruise is toast, and not even bacon toast. We were looking forward to it, but like everyone else who had things to look forward to but are being derailed, we understand safety and health are #1. I cannot even fathom the feelings of those who passed away on board far from home, much less their families at home. I’m entertaining myself looking at late 2021 itineraries to use an expected cruise credit on.

I feel for those in the travel industry, from the big companies to the small businesses, such as the Alaska whale-watching boat captains and crews who count on summer season cruise traffic to generate bookings. That is drying up. Such wide and deep impacts from this.

This brought a tear to my eye.

I remember 9/11 obviously. It didn't affect me directly....here in the Midwest, I watched on TV. I knew of a distant connection that died in one of the towers. It was an emotional time.

THIS pandemic affected EVERYONE directly. Everyone. It’s unbelievable it’s tentacles. The dominoes that continue to fall. Even as I am feeling more comfortable in this new ‘normal’, I still find at least daily, something else that’s shocking to me.

Do they feel the same to y’all?

The article quotes the Chief Maritime Officer for Carnival who is a retired three star/USNA Classmate. We cruised with him and his wife
and got home the week before the virus started shutting everything down. The ship was already working pretty hard to keep people
and things sanitized and there were constant reminders to wash hands along with hand sanitizer stations set up in a LOT of places.

We live in the NYC area - a very short walk to a commuter rail station feeding NYC and many in our neighborhood are (or I should say were) NYC workers/commuters. Needless to say, we are in the midst of the breakout. Our kids are also in "interesting" spots, one in Manhattan just a couple of blocks from Bellevue hospital and another in Med School in Washington State which had the initial breakout in the US.

As for my wife and I, well we had it and thankfully,we had mild cases. She had a COVID test and it was positive, my symptoms were not severe enough for the county to expend a test on me but I had pretty much the same symptoms as my wife. We had it for about a week with fevers and some of the other symptoms but it pretty much cleared up by late last week and we've been symptom free for 5 or 6 days now. It was scary and we were worried but followed the guidelines and directions for treatment and got through it. We feel pretty lucky/thankful.

Wow, thank goodness!! I did have a self-quarantine early on as I was exposed, but never got it. Prayers to all our forum members to stay safe, stay healthy. Take care, people!!
