Hey everyone, just wanted to say you can reply to this or PM me anytime to ask questions about USAFA, 4 degree/doolie year, BCT, the application process- anything. I'd be more than happy to help because I remember how useful this forum was when I was applying last year.

What were your stats like? Also congrats on getting into the academy and best of luck!

I’d like to know about BCT and how soon you submitted your application and received an appointment?

Academically, I had a 1470 SAT, 4.8 GPA (that's the USAFA recalculated one), took a mix of AP and IB classes. Athletically, my CFA wasn't anything special, but I played and lettered in 3 high school sports, and was the captain of two of them. I was in NHS, and did a lot of volunteering through that, and on my own. I found a couple projects that I was really passionate about and dedicated a lot of time to those so that I could really make an impact instead of spreading myself too thin.

The thing is, once you're here, nobody cares what SAT you had, GPA- all those numbers don't matter. Additionally, nobody really knows what numbers will get you in. Obviously, the averages are posted, but that's just it: an average. Some kids are below average and get in, and conversely, some are above average and don't get in. So, try not to obsess about the numbers/ compare yourself with other stats on here or with mine. So many other things are behind the scenes like essays, interviews, how competitive the slates are, etc. Good luck!

I submitted my PCQ in May 2018, and got candidate status July 2018. My application was due 14 November 2019 I think. Anyways, there were no updates to my portal, and I heard nothing from USAFA until 17 April 2019 when I got offered an appointment. If you look at last year's appointment thread (search 2023 appointment thread), you'll see that a lot of appointments were dropped around the end of April...this means, buckle up, it could be a while until you hear anything.

As far as BCT, it's tough. My best advice is to get in the best physical shape possible- but know that you'll break no matter what. It's a mentally and physically exhausting 5.5 weeks, but it will be all worth it. When you get your shoulder boards on Acceptance day, you'll be so proud. There are going to be a LOT of changes to BCT for 2024, so I won't go into much specifics because a lot of it could look very different for you.

How is doolie year treating you so far? Have you enjoyed your time? What are your most and least favorite parts of being at the academy? Also, thank you for answering questions!

What kind of changes? You can be broad, it doesn’t matter.

I've enjoyed it so far. There's a lot of rules doolies have to follow that are pretty annoying, and that can be frustrating. My squad has a great training staff that holds us to a high standard, but they always make sure to let us know the purpose behind the training. They make the training sessions meaningful, but not every squad does. Training sessions are tough, mentally and physically like basic. I'd say the best part is the friends I've made in and out of squad. It's great when your best friends live down the hall and know exactly what you're going through. Academics are tough, and time management is everything.

Nothing is set in stone, and we don't really know enough specifics. I don't want to spread anything because I honestly don't know what it's going to look like. The new commandant has a vision for changing up training and BCT, so I'll just leave it at that. Either way, you guys will still be challenged and pushed to your limits.

I know that doolies have to greet upperclassmen when they see them, but are there areas where the greetings are not necessary? It sounds silly, but having to greet upperclassmen during class and while studying would be one of my main worries about 4/C year.

Doolies are at rest in Fairchild (the academic buildings) the gym, Arnold hall, your dorm room (at rest means you can talk, walk without your hands cupped, and don't greet). There's places where you can be at ease (no greeting or walking at attention, but you don't have to greet) such as the ramps down to the gym or the bridges to Fairchild. In Mitchell hall, you're at attention until the table commadant places you at rest or ease, but again, all these ROEs will be spelled out for you in the CSI and you'll be briefed and tested on them early in the year. And also they vary year to year.

We greet whenever we are on the strips on the Terrazzo, and in the hallways in squad. You're expected to know everyone's rank, First last MI, and job title and greet when you see them. That's the expectation, but unfortunately not all the upperclassmen enforce it. Basically, there's a lot 4 degree ROEs (rules of engagement), and one of them is greeting. We're expected to greet everyone within one Tzo block with Good morning/afternoon/evening Sir/ma'am, followed by squad motto. You also learn and greet all wing and group staff. Additionally, you double time on the strips unless there's bad weather, you just ate a meal, or are carrying a large object.

You'll get used to memorizing names and jobs during BCT and get tested then as well. Of course, all names and jobs switch for the ac year and each semester, so you'll have to relearn a whole new list.

Do you think it is wise to submit a not so great application senior year of HS, in hopes that when the board sees your improved application freshmen year of college, they will see the perseverance?

Is this really a question ? if you are serious about attending any Service Academy, you should put 100% + effort into everything. Trying to game the system won't get you into any Service Academy.

I am interpreting the question from @J3Rizzo differently, and that he is not trying to "game" the system.

I think he is reluctant to submit a academically non-competitive application while in HS and intends to reapply in college with better grades and scores. It's my belief that he is wondering if he is shooting himself in the foot by not submitting a high school USAFA application at all.

Hi,
Quick questions from a junior that's soon applying!

1) What can I do to get ahead and stand out from other students in my grade (sadly, my school doesn't offer sports so captain of a sport is a no go)
2) What helped you get a high SAT score? Any study tips?
3) How much did they weigh each thing in the app? What should I focus the most on improving (SAT, GPA, athletics, etc)?
4) What classes are you taking right now? How do they differ from HS classes?
5) Any application tips in general?

Anything will be helpful, especially from a USAFA student. Thank you for taking the time out of your day to answer everyone

Hope everything is going well and you're enjoying your time!

What was the most challenging part of the application process for you?
For me it was the CFA and essays. I was a 3 sport athlete in high school, but I wasn't used to doing pushups and running a mile for time. It just took some dedication and training and I got where I needed to be eventually.

For the essays, it just took a bit for me to decide what the write about, but I eventually just picked something, went with it, and got people to help revise for grammar.

To keep on top of deadlines, I literally just wrote them all down and set goals for myself on when I wanted to have the different parts of the app done.

For interviews, I practiced with friends and practiced answering the typical questions like why do you want to come here and why should we choose you. Etc.

Do you have any time to do the gym during the week? And if so, how much time

What was your GPA?
What classes did you take? Any community college classes?
ACT/SAT score?
When did you become interested in the academy?
