Current Plebe at USMA

Current plebe at USMA. Ask away, I'll try to do my best to answer them.
Have plebes selected their majors yet, or is that at the end of the year? Also, do you have to be accepted by the specific major (ex., In order to become a mechanical engineering major a cadet must have shown proficiency in math and science during high school)?

Not yet. I'm pretty sure we actually get the opportunity of selecting them as early as next week. Not 100% on that though. However, the answer I can give you that is a fact is that all plebes select their majors early on 2nd semester.

Can you have any items such a small coffee maker or fridge in your room?

Should we get boots and black shoes and break them in before we arrive?

Do we get a backpack to use during the academic year? Is it possible to bring our own?

DS tells me one small appliance is allowed. No fridge.
Low quarters and boots are purchased beforehand and should be worn before beast.
Backpacks are issued. We bought DS one before he left and he uses that instead of the one that was issued.

1. Yes coffee maker, no to fridge and cooking appliances.
2. Absolutely. Make sure they fit very well.
3. You are issued one. '24 and '25 received nice North Face ones so I would expect you would receive the same. If you buy one, it must be all black with blacked out logos.

What classes do you take the first semester of plebe year, do you have any choice in which ones you would like to do, or does that primarily come with when you choose your major?

Sorry to steal the Plebe's thread but it appears they've become busy with Plebe things --

During your Plebe year you have very little control over your academic schedule. You will take a lot of "gen eds" like English, Chemistry, Physics, math, history, etc. Here is an example of a four-year schedule of courses you will take. Your credits will vary dramatically based on your major.

Thank you for your help! I was also wondering what double majoring looks like for cadets, especially if they're outside of the same department (ex. I had thought about possibly psychology and defense & strategic studies)?

That is probably doable. It is a lot of work to double-major. I am an engineering major with a minor in Terrorism Studies and I have a very hefty courseload (even with validations and STAP). You will be able to talk to an academic counselor when you get here and figure out if you can double-count any classes. Try to validate as much as you can and don't expect it to be an easy road.

Other than the cadet stipend are there any ways to make money at USMA?
You will receive book money every semester ($600-$1000 depending on class year) which goes a little towards books and a lot towards whatever else. You can't take a second job or anything while you are here and getting by on Plebe pay is not always easy, but it is doable.
