Current Plebe

Congratulations on your appointment and subsequent completion of plebe summer. I hope you can find the time to answer a few questions.

First, what is “shotgunning” of the plebe class? Second, what was your best/favorite/most fun experience during plebe summer?

Thanks

Shotgunning of a plebe class entails that the plebes of one company will be switched to another company at the start of their 3/C year. For example, 6th company plebes may be switched to 19th company as youngsters. Or 13 to 3. Any number of combinations.

This process was implemented last year again, after being abandoned quite some years ago. We have a new Commandant this year, so word has not been officially passed on if we will be shotgunned, but rumor has it that we most likely will. This provides the Brigade with diversity when it comes to training styles, as many different companies train the 4/C in different ways. Personally, I am not a fan of this method, because I enjoy the bonds and respect you build with your upperclass throughout plebe year.

Also, plebe summer is what we like to call "type 2 fun." Type 1 fun is when you enjoy the activity in the heat of the moment. Type 2 fun is when it's fun to look back on, but not necessarily fun to do. Plebe Summer carries some of the funniest experiences you will ever have. People will say some of the dumbest things and these things will always stay in your mind. However, plebe summer is a grind. One activity is not necessarily hard, but with the combination of the activities of 6 weeks, it can be exhausting. A positive mindset everyday is crucial.

My biggest highlight of plebe summer was the people I was able to meet. My classmates are absolutely amazing. Each person at this Academy is. It blows my mind everyday that I am able to learn and train alongside some of the best people in the country. It's truly an honor each and every midshipman sees here. Make friends and form the bonds that will last a lifetime.
