Currently serving in NG, what happens if I don't like USMA?

Hello all, I have another question! I am currently serving in the WA National Guard. What would happen if I were admitted to West Point and decided that I did not want to continue at the two-year mark where people are allowed to quit without repercussions? Would I have to go back to the National Guard and finish my previous contract, or would I be done? Thanks!

(Disclaimer: If I am admitted to USMA I fully intend on finishing as this is what I want for myself and my career, but my family is asking!)

Hey there. Based on the oath I signed, you would simply revert back to your previous unit and position to serve the remainder of your past obligation of enlistment.

From my USMA 5-50:

"A cadet who enters USMA from the Regular or Reserve Component of any military service and who resigns or is separated from USMA prior to the commencement of the Second Class academic year will revert to his or her former status for the completion of any prior service obligation. As an exception, Invitational Reservists (cadets who entered the United States Military Academy Preparatory School from a civilian status) who resign or are separated from USMA prior to commencement of his or her second class academic year will be discharged from the Army. A cadet who entered USMA from the Regular Army or any Reserve Component of the Army and who has at the time of separation a remaining prior service obligation of less than one year, may, upon the approval of the Secretary of the Army or his designee, be discharged with waiver of any prior service obligation. All service as a cadet is counted in computing the unexpired portion of the enlistment or period of obligated service."

Basically, if you end up wanting to transfer out, I'd get with a JAG here and see what your options are. Hope this helps.

I also think that if you separate from USMA but have attended at least 1 school year, upon return to your unit you might be enlisted as a PFC (E2).
