Danner - Tachyon v Rivot

Are Oakley's boot any good?
Does have experience with Oakley boots? I plan on getting a pair of those.
I'm a huge fan. My entire friend group here got the same Oakleys and they got us through Ice trials, O/E course here. Not super soft/padded for day to day or school, but weigh literally nothing and are great for running. As always, try them on. Had one friend absolutely hate them while the other 10 of us still wear them, so its all personal preference.

Doesn't USNA issue you boots for PS though? Or did you buy black Oakley boots to go with the NWUs for the academic year?

Yeah you'll have to wear the horrible 50lb boots for the summer. I bought brown Oakleys for my NWUs around Oct/Nov of the ac year. You'll honestly do more stuff in boots over the ac year than the summer, (think morning workouts, smts, tactical thursdays,) so the issued ones aren't too bad for the few times you'll wear them.

Don't NWU boots have to be black? I didn't know you could wear brown boots with NWUs.

Thought I would share DS's take on the three boots ordered: Danner Rivot, Danner Tachyon, and the Belleville C320 One Xero (Wearing Darn Tough midweight Tactical boot sock)

Danner Rivot STF
Size 11 EE

Certification: AFI 36-2903 Compliant, AR 670-1 Compliant

Pros: Beefy sole, the most well-made boot (boot's upper is stitched to the sole and there's cushioning on the tongue and collar), very comfortable in the ankle, longevity: this boot will last

Cons: This boot will survive at the expense of the man/woman wearing it - very heavy when dry, comfort in the wrong place (collar cushioning), less support in ankle than Belleville, pricey at $400

Danner Tachyon
Size 11 EE

Certification: AR 670-1 Compliant (The only certification listed on the box - I have found seller websites that state this boot is AFI 36-2903 compliant)

Pros: Immediately loved the feel of this boot, very Light, feels like a running shoe, immediately comfortable, thin sole, great boot for heat

Cons: Construction: glue and gaping visible between sole and upper, no ankle support, perhaps not the best cold weather boot, noisy - the sole squeaks on hard floors

Belleville C320 One Zero
Size 10.5 Wide

Certification: AFI 36-2903 Compliant, AR 670-1 Compliant

Pros: Nice ankle support, a mid-weight boot at 40 oz/pair, Beefy Sole, Under $200 but construction is better quality than Tachyon

Cons: would benefit from an insole (cushion), heavier than Tachyons,

So far, DS says the Tachyons were the most comfortable boot. However, he isn't happy with the lack of ankle support. So, the Belleville wins this round.

I wear Rocky RCK055 boots for JROTC events and have done a 13.1 carrying a 35-pound ruck and had great support and no blisters.

Thanks. We returned the Danners today and ordered the Rocky RKC050 and Bellville C790. I think those Rocky boots are the heaviest yet at 4 lbs. Not hopeful but figured if it's in the appointee handbook it's worth a shot. Tried to find the Salomon Guardian's mentioned in the appointee handbook but they have been discontinued.

I don’t wear my NWUs a lot anymore in aviation, but when I do have to wear them on watch, I wear the coyote brown Rocky boots without the steel toe. Super comfortable.

For steel toes, the older style Belleville flight deck boots are pretty comfortable. I have them in dark brown, but they also come in black

DS got the Oakleys Lt Assault 2 and has worn them a few times already - a 5 mile run recently and on a mountain hike right now. He doesn't have wide feet or any issues he has to work around and seems quite happy with them.

Which academies allow you to wear your own boot during basic? Do all require you to wear the issued boot?

What is the best boot from Nike and Oakley, respectively?

Just want to add that I wear the Belleville all day every day on concrete and they hold up really well over time with no distortion or support breakdown. Both my DS wear them and love them. I know the Nike and Oakley are trendy and light but it really is worth trying the Bellville for support, longevity and durability.

USMA and USAFA do, USNA does not. USNA issues you boots on I Day but you are free to use your own boots during the academic year.

Probably still have to follow the boot regs for Navy, right? They’re a lot more restrictive than USAF and Army.

What do people think of the Lowa Zephyr GTX Hi? Or the Garmont T8? Are they good boots?

Are they allowed at USMA and USAFA Basics? I don't know which academy I am going to yet so I prefer one that works for all three.

I've heard very good things about the Garmont T8 from Cadets at USMA and USAFA.

I'm not sure if USNA have the same requirements, but the USAFA appointee handbook, requires waterproof boots for Basic. What's your experience with the Oakleys Lt Assault II and water? Oakley customer service says they are not waterproof (or even water resistant.)

So the Belleville 790s are backordered beyond 90 days. Canceled that order.

The Rocky RKC050 nearly won the final boot round last night. Comfortable, sturdy, well made, most supportive, etc. But… the ankle of the boot cuts in where it meets the boot collar, and this created a rub point. No go.

Belleville C320 it is - just ordering a reg width now b/c that is one spacious boot in the toe box.
