Dating at the academy

An admissions rep told me that fourth and third class cadets can’t date anyone at the academy. Is that still true?

Unless the rules have changed recently....

4/c: can date within their class
3/c: can date within their class or one class up (2/c)
2/c: can date within their class or one class up (1/c) or down (3/c)
1/c: can date within their class or one class down (2/c)

Even with dating being allowed, there are quite a few rules to keep in mind, especially within Chase Hall.

That's what our tour guides a couple weeks ago said in answer to a parent question.

Stories from my 4/c indicate the dating scene is a little scandalous. During swab summer there are some instances of "swabie love". Then into the school year various stories of some dating rules being broken known as "fraternization". Seems to be an easy way to get in trouble, so probably best to stick with the rules. On the lighter side sounds like penalties include restriction and marching tours, on the harsher side they could get masted or worse.

Firsties have been disenrolled and/or set back for breaking frat restrictions. I have personal knowledge of a case involving a first class and a prior enlisted underclass that was actually older. The relative ages are irrelevant; it is the difference in seniority that matters. In that case the firstie was not separated, but did get set back for a full year. The penalties can be quite harsh.

Just follow the rules and you will be ok. Many cadets don't follow the rules and follow their heart instead. Lot's of investigations and Masts for Frat (fraternization). Rules for grade level as described above and for positions too for example CO and XO cannot date even in the same class, etc.

These Frat cases can do a lot of damage, as there is usually a lie or two by someone (honor violation) involved and maybe a roommate knew but did not say anything, another violation, you get the point. Others not involved can get caught up in the couples violations.

In the past if found guilty depending on circumstances etc, it can get quite significant penalties like droping 25 or 50 spots in class rank which can have a devastating effect on billet night, etc. Commandant of Cadets change from time to time with a new philosophy.

Just follow the rules and you can have both a career and dating life. When your 18 you feel you can outsmart everyone and get away with it, at the Academies some one is always watching or talking and word gets out. Have fun but be smart and follow the rules.

It also puts your friends in a bad spot where they're obligated to cover for you or face trouble of their own. I know it's difficult due to the widespread hotness of the entire Coastie community, but do your best. It's for everyone's good.

Don't date another cadet when you've got a whole college of normal women across the campus
So, not sure what your definition of “normal” is, but unless you mean staff, the policy prohibits dating them. There are no civilian females on the campus - unless you mean a few veteran students, MECEPS or Active duty Navy, the closest non-cadet females are at College of Charleston downtown….But I always advise just avoid dating among cadets, my opinion, unless the person is in your class and neither of you are in the chain of command.

During our visit to Charleston last spring, it was a beautiful day and the lawn outside the CofC library was absolutely filled with co-eds in various states of undress as they soaked up the April sunshine. This was duly noted by DS...

Lol. He’s talking about conn college. The school across the street from the Coast Guard Academy. The Service Academy this page applies too..

And when you commission and serve as an officer, there are rules there in the fleet too - it's a no for an officer dating enlisted soldiers, and there are further rules about officers dating officers in the chain of command, etc.

Some of the Conn College students even take a few classes at the Academy and vice versa.

As a mom of a daughter this is pretty offensive especially considering how exceptional USCGA cadets of all genders are … but I guess if you’d prefer your son pursue someone w less drive, ambition and brains I get it 🙄
Welcome to the Coast Guard. Don’t worry, the normal women generally aren’t interested in the weird Academy people.
Also, to be fair, the average ACT at conn is significantly higher than CGA
