Is there a deadline to apply? If so when is the Texas Boys State deadline, as I can not find it on the website, and every American Legion post in my area has not been reachable through telephone or email.

I applied to my local post early March. Haven’t heard a decision back yet but they did not indicate it was too late and told me i could still apply. Nice to see another Texas junior!

The application mailing deadline in NC is May 1st. My DS interviewed last year, 4/17/19 (and was invited to attend). This screenshot is from our American Legion website under 2020 BOYS' STATE DELAGATE APPLICATION FILLABLE, so maybe you can find something similar in your state.

In MN and my DD interviewed 2 weeks ago and received word he will be sponsored. I would google your local post and I’m guessing some stories on the post will pop up. Open some and you will probably see some names that are associated with the post. Then just try to dig to find an email. Our post only has a FB page with only a phone number. My DD did what I described above and was able to connect with someone which led to an interview.

There is likely a deadline overall for Texas Boys State, but as you mentioned, it is not clearly indicated on their website. Based on our experience last year, it largely depends on your local American Legion post. We had some trouble figuring out which post specifically covered our area (our area has several posts). I finally had to email the Texas American Legion leadership, explain the situation, and they provided contact info for several points of contact in our area. After contacting a few of them, we figured out which was the right one. Just so you know, if you live in an area with multiple posts, they all split up the area high schools, so you will end up having to keep trying those posts until you get a clear answer.

On another note, it is likely NOT too late. Last year, while my DS submitted the completed application in January, he did not hear from the American Legion post until mid-March to interview, then received confirmation he was selected in mid-April. I think each post gets to send a certain number of boys, so as long as your corresponding post hasn't selected all their boys yet, you should still have a chance.

Unfortunately Boys state was canceled Tuesday in MN. I was finnaly able to contact my local Legion to start the application, but while we were getting all the paper work set up, they canceled it. Hopefully they set it back up

Boys State in VA was cancelled yesterday (DH is Legion member and got the email)
28 March 2020,
On behalf of the entire American Legion Boys State of Virginia Board of Directors, leadership team, and staff, we are saddened that we have had to make the decision to cancel this year’s 78th session of Virginia Boys State due to the continued concerns regarding the COVID-19 pandemic. For the health and well-being of the participants and staff, as well as the Radford University employees who assist our program, we felt this was the right call to make with so much uncertainty still ahead.

I can tell you that New Jersey Boys State is still working toward having our session in June. I'm the County Coordinator and
also handle interviews for several High Schools. A number of the high schools that I cover have not gotten back to me and
I doubt that they will nominate anyone. I have a number of nominees though and will be interviewing them in the next couple
of weeks. The Director and his staff are evaluating the overall situation and trying to make it a go for this year but we just don't
know yet.

For What Its worth: NJ Girls State has announced that they will be doing a virtual program this year. We do not know how that
will work.

Some states will let you self sponsor (ie pay your own way) if you cannot/do not link up with a local post. Believe it or not, some states (in areas extremely competitive for WP even) don't get as many kids as they'd like and are actively recruiting all year long. I doubt TX is one of those that "needs" applicants, but you might be surprised if you contact the state leadership and ask about self sponsoring. I think the cost for the week is around $200, which is normally paid for by a local American Legion post.

If its $200 then that is by far the lowest that I've heard of in recent years. NJ was at $250 for the past few years and we were the lowest bog program that I'd heard of with many of them at $400 and $500. We jumped to $275 for this year as our actual costs were $275 and we could not afford to take a loss on each kid.

I was quoting the amount told to me by a friend, but her son is in his 3rd year now. I forgot to take inflation into account. :)
