Deferred Applicant - Good thing?

Hi all,

I wanted to come here and ask about what being deferred means. Does this mean you are considered a good applicant? In past admissions cycles, are deferred applicants more commonly accepted, denied, or neither?

Also, when will deferred applicants begin to hear from the RA cycle?

Deferred means that when the USCGA Admissions Board evaluated your packet, they found you qualified and a good candidate. They did not rank you as high as those that they already offered appointments to from EA, but they ranked you higher than those that they have already given a denial to. USCGA does not want to give all appointments to those in the early admissions group, so they defer some to compare them against the applicants in the regular admissions group. So now you are competing against all the other deferred applicants from EA and the regular admissions pool applicants. I do not believe that USCGA has publicly shared the numbers this year.
While you wait, I believe that you can still submit any improvements to your packet. I know for sure that you can do that as an applicant before your packet is evaluated. I do not know for sure about deferred, but it can't hurt to send in 1st semester transcripts, any improved tests scores, if you were selected as a team captain, if you earned some other significant recognition, etc... I would also continue to contact your AO to let them know you are still very much interested. If you have been talking with the coach for your sport, let them know you are still interested and give them any updates on your stats. Good luck.

How do you find out if you’ve been deferred? We didn’t receive that information at CFAD. Was told all communication by mail except for when they inform you your packet is being sent for review(email).

Pretty confident deferrals only happen in EA (early action) admissions not RA (regular admissions).

Correct - deferrals are only in EA. Considering how many applicants are outright rejected during EA, I consider differal a good thing. It is a middle-ground, but certainly better than a "NO." Although the outcome could still be "NO" once all the appointments are offered, it means you are still in the game and there are plenty of applicants who are not.
