Sadly I got denied from SLE with a pretty strong application. I won't go into details but I'm disappointed. Do I still have an ok chance of getting into West Point?
Thanks y'all

Best, Evan

If you do any browsing here, you’ll see again and again this perennial issue - and getting into SLE is not necessarily a predictor of your being offered an appointment. The majority of cadets and midshipmen attending SAs have not attended a SA summer program.

Focus on putting together the strongest application you can, as well as prudently developing alternate plans.

My daughter had a decent application, but I wouldn't say it was "strong". This now gives her the kick to know she probably needs to improve her application for the SA, and to strategize the best way to do so. To be fair, I don't think she can really improve her athletics much (not bragging - she's just very solid there, I believe), and she already has some other leadership roles in school outside of athletics. For her, it will probably involve improving her standardized tests scores and grades, and perhaps seeking out more volunteer opps. She's also applying to Girls State (which she had already planned to do, but isn't available to apply to before spring Junior year, and they only released the application in March here). You may want to look into Boys State.

I luckily got accepted to Boys" state. Thanks for the Advice!

Said this in another thread but it's still true:

I didn't get into SLE but I received an LOA, a senatorial nomination, and a very early appointment...

Trust me, don't worry about not getting into SLE. There's a lot of work you need to be doing between now and January 31st (SAT/ACT prep, working out, etc.) that is waaaaay more important. If you work on the things that are in your control, your chances increase exponentially.

Thank you, really!

Ditto all the other advice so far. I didn't get into USAFA SS or NASS (I did get into SLE), and I ended up getting appointed to both USNA and USAFA (I didn't apply to WP at all). I applied with a 1470 SAT, straight As, community service, clubs, and all the other usual stuff - I also am a minority and live nowhere near any of the SAs. Just remember that selection for NASS, SLE, and USAFA SS are not really based on you as a person, but more on your demographic and who WP/the SA is looking for. I even used the same exact essay from my USAFA SS application for my actual USAFA application, and I ended up with an appointment. I know it definitely sucks at the moment (I also felt down about not getting into NASS or SS) but it really has no bearing on your application at all. Keep your head up and good luck!

Definitely not the end. I heard that majority of accepted candidate didn't even goto SLE. I recommend you to do boys state instead of going to SLE because boys state will actually help you increase your whole candidate points

Are you saying she is fit and in shape or are you implying that she is really good in at least one sport?

Life is often unfair but if it’s the latter then she is miles ahead of the others who will not be sports recruits.

Even with fairly average grades a year at the prep school and then the SA is a very strong chance——as long as she is really good in at least one sport

If I still haven't heard, should I email them? I applied on first day but just started looking at status closer to April 15 deadline. Reading this forum I'm worried it went to spam, which deletes every 30 days. But I don't want to be pushy either.

I think that West Point has the unique criteria for SLE. Both my children were not invited to SLE but received the appointments even before 1st Wave, e.g., early phase without an LOA. I know some other candidates experienced the same.

My children were invited to other SAs' summer seminars though.

Whereas another competitive candidate in our region who was invited to SLE didn't receive an appointment from WP eventually.

Don't be discouraged by one single event which is not reflecting your true competitiveness. Keep working on other leadership opportunities. Trust what other experienced SA forum users said above.

check your spam sometimes mine ends up their, maybe use the search bar in your email that always helps me.

Admissions can see in your application portal whether or not you applied for and were accepted into SLE or not. But it has absolutely no bearing on whether or not you get an offer of appointment to West Point. The strength of your application is not impacted one single bit by SLE. Work on making your application the strongest it can be, focus on getting every nomination you can, and allow the process to play out.

If it makes you feel any better, I was denied from SLE but still got an LOA and was accepted. Like many of the responses here have said, just focus on making your application the best it can be!
