Denied From SLE, Is This The End?

There are limited slots for SLE, so it has little to no bearing on you gaining an appointment. A good alternative to it is Boys State. Regardless, I agree with several other posters - stay focused on having as strong an Admissions (and Nominations) packet(s) as possible regardless of the SLE decision. Good luck!

Sadly I got denied from SLE with a pretty strong application. I won't go into details but I'm disappointed. Do I still have an ok chance of getting into West Point?
Thanks y'all

Best, Evan
My son applied in 2020 (Covid). When we hadn't heard by April, I called and was told ONE person (and only one) did the admitting to SLE! That year that quit accepting once the pandemic closed everything. So, we will never know for sure about SLE. He did get into NASS and attended online. He is about to finish his plebe year at USMA. Don't worry about it and as everyone has advised, focus on your application. Good luck!

Evan,

I was in the same boat as you. SLE does not matter at all in the admissions process, it is simply to help teenagers figure out if West Point is truly for them. I did not get into SLE, and I too was disappointed. However, I still received an appointment. Do not beat yourself up over something that doesn't have a true effect on your official application. Instead, you can use the time you would be spending at SLE to study for the SAT/ACT or work on another part of your application that might be a little bit weaker.

DS did not get into SLE but was a fairly early appointment (December).

Evan,

It is not a good indicator of whether or not you will be accepted. I went to summer seminar at USAFA and was declined an appointment. I got declined to SLE but was accepted to West Point. Don’t worry. Just keep building your application, and focus on the things you can control. You’ll be fine.

No! Do not feel discouraged. I was denied for USAFA’s summer program and I still received an appointment offer. Keep your head up and continue your application! Good luck, and if you have questions feel free to ask.

My firstie is about to graduate in a few weeks and I found myself wandering back into this forum. Maybe to give some thoughts that are hopefully be useful for CC. My cadet did not applied for SLE, USMA was his back up for USNA. He did not receive appointment to USNA that year. Actually our entire district did not receive any appointment in 2018. What you need now is to sharpen your short essays. Regardless which ever service academy you will attend, you need to work on your chemistry, your calculus, and your physics to the point that you understand the subjects inside out without second guessing yourself. Why? you will have time to enjoy your first year at the academy than finding yourself to get help/tutor on those subjects.

Hi, Evan! I just wanted to let you know not to be discouraged. Keep on with your plans. My daughter got in to to summer seminars for USNA and USMA and not USAFA. She didn't get appointments to USNA or USMA but got an appointment to USAFA. You never can tell how it will all shake out...just keep working hard toward your goals and you will end up where you are supposed to.

There are too many factors to account for in the application process for SLE and West Point that no one knows what your chances are. Keep doing good in school, keep doing good in your extra curriculars, and don't give up. Its only over when you see the Official Correspondence letter telling you its over(for your West Point application)

Even on the contrary,

Got into SLE and NASS, Senator nom in Texas to navy, straight A’s, 1490 sat, tons of leadership and extracurriculars, 3 varsity sports…didn’t receive an appointment to usna. However I did receive an loa and appointment to USMA. You really can never tell with the academies, and Nass/SLE/USAFA SS wasn’t a good indicator of who did get appointments. Actually, in my Nass squad, only one got into usna, and he chose uscga. However, everyone in my Nass squad is going to a service academy (USAFA, USMA USCGA), just not usna. However, my SLE squad had like 6 of us get appointed to USMA. You really can never tell. Long story short, the summer programs are not something that will tell you if you’re going to get an appointment, stay hopeful. Go army, beat navy!

You will not get into West Point.

Lol just kidding. No, the SLE isn't super relevant to your application. I was denied with a very strong application and got accepted. I stressed about it too. Don't sweat it.

Definitely not the end. I heard that majority of accepted candidate didn't even goto SLE. I recommend you to do boys state instead of going to SLE because boys state will actually help you increase your whole candidate points
This. Boys state!
