Denied Waiver - is there any other option?

My daughter who was awarded a AFROTC scholarship - got DQ’ed for mental health. Her Dad and I knew she wasn’t sleeping due to stresses and we had her see someone for a short period of time to help her work through it. Nothing serious. She was put on a low dose of meds for 9 mos. she went off the meds and has been doing fantastic! We submitted for a waiver - and it came back rather quickly denied. I think we are all sort of stunned by this decision as there were no real mental issues present. Is this the last recourse for her? Once waiver is denied - is she able to reapply after a set amount of time? I feel so bad for her - we really thought this was a non-issue.

That happened to us too. Larry Mullen can explain better but if it’s just a “history of” it may ultimately “expire”. She should reapply next year!

I love recovering helicopter moms handle.
I believe she did earlier today - letting the applicant handle this on her own. Posted for my own sanity.

What was your outcome?

Is there still a question for me?

hberger87 - Have her email me at Lawrence.e.mullen.civ@mail.mil :wiggle:

DD inquired to AETC and they said she couldn’t access the scholarship. She had a fabulous conversation with Mr Mullen awhile back. She appears to be striking out this year with the SA’s as well but plans to reapply until one lets her in. In the meantime she will attend Univ of CA and do ROTC as a walk on. Best of luck to you and never give up!

If Air Force is what your DD really wants, I would encourage looking at the USAFA. I also received an AFROTC scholarship last year and was medically DQ'd for a history of atopic dermatitis. AFROTC was quick with a waiver denied. I tried to refute it by seeing four world-renowned eczema experts all over the country--each one looking at my records and writing a letter of why what was in my records was not atopic dermatitis (and that I would be perfectly fine to serve).

AFROTC medical authority denied me a waiver again. When calling, they essentially told me they did not care for what the experts had to say. I was denied a waiver on over four occasions. AROTC was quick to medically clear me, so I joined AROTC. I reapplied to the USAFA and USMA. Both granted my waiver and I've been offered appointments to both!

Great outcome. Congratulations and way to persevere!

Different waiver authorities, even within the same Service, "can" arrive at different waiver decisions :wiggle:

She was told she could appeal now or wait 36 months with no symptoms. This puts her in college as a junior - 2nd semester at that point. She has been in touch with Larry since it was DQ’ed in January. He was helpful in explaining the process. He deferred her to her waiver contacts.

Anyone have luck with the appeals process?

Appeals are generally successful under two circumstances:

1. New medical information, not character references, that reveals the waiver denial may have been inappropriate.

2. The medical information provided was certified as being false. Happens with twins sometimes, when the treating physician mixed up the notes of one twin and place in the records of another twin. :wiggle:

My DD contacted her local AFROTC detachment for Fall 2020 and they said she can’t even “walk on” or participate without the scholarship. without a waiver. So she is wondering where to go from here.

Recoveringhelicoptermom - Your recovery is not going so well.:zip:
You have now entered the Osprey Mom Club -- Hovering and going at Mach II:yay:
Based on just this posting and not knowing anything about the case...it sounds like ROTC and potential military service is not in the cards
