Hello,

I have completed my application for USAFA class of 2025. During my medical examinations I was told I had 20/20 vision in both eyes, but lacked depth perception. I was wondering if this would disqualify me from possibly attending USAFA or if it would affect me. I understand you cannot be a pilot and certain other specialized fields. Does this limit my ability to possible attend USAFA?

I also would like to say I have never had an issue with 3D or anything that would say I don’t have depth perception. I was able to identify objects that stated I had depth perception, however my doctor stated I don’t?

send me an email: lawrence.e.mullen.civ@mail.mil; provide complete name and last 4 SSN; paste your postings, the text, not the links, to your email. I will reply late tonight. :wiggle:

As a grad who had "depth perception issues" what I can say is it will have no factor getting into any academy. The pain comes from the docs at the academy itself when trying to do any of the airmanship programs because they state that you must have perfect depth perception for certain things and to be a pilot. They are way wrong. For everything revolving around your pilot qualification (PQ) you only have to pass the first 4 groups and the medics will help you out through it too. What you can also do is memorize the depth perception chart because it never changes and go that route. Another hint, it is never 1 or 5.

How many opportunities do they get to test for depth perception while at USAFA? I have a cadet preparing to enter C2C year and has requested to retest but has so far been told no.

FAIPWithin's comments are not helpful and not accurate. These are senior or master flight surgeons. Your "depth perception issues" is a reflection of you and not these super experienced flight surgeons.

"I have a cadet preparing to enter C2C year and has requested to retest but has so far been told no." Soooooooo, as a C2C, this is his issue to resolve and as a first-hand Mom, getting involved in a second-hand issue, is not productive for your son.
I "suspect," he asked the question in more finite terms and received this as an answer. "so far has been told no...." If all is accurate, that's the answer. :wiggle:
