I understand we are going to be issued laptops with the card readers but I was wondering if any cadets have desktop PCs and if there are any policies surrounding them. I have a desktop I would like to bring with me (maybe not for plebe year, but as an upperclassman).

Also, does anyone know the make/model of laptop we are issued at BEAST?

Do you mean a Tower/Server model with a “Detached” keyboard and monitor? I think these are frowned upon (space is a premium). Your own personal Notebook device is Ok.

As far as issued Notebook, I believe it’s an HP Pavilion (or equivalent) with a 250/500G SSD.

I do not know if personal "desktop computers" are authorized or allowed. I can say that in order to connect to the WP Intranet (wi-fi) you need to turn your device in to IT to be checked and the appropriate security software and protocols installed. DS had to turn in his I-Pad before it would function. WP is so far from commercial wi-fi the only available network is WP's, and since it is accessed by students/staff and used for official WP activities and classes it has some unique software. I have a desktop with card reader I use for government work and our DS tried to use it since he has been home because it is hardwired and has two screens, but he could not access the intranet at WP to get access. I would ask someone who is informed and at WP about your question, I know there are posts here from current Cadets that can better answer your question, I can only speak to what our son experienced.

It shouldn't be an issue. West Point has moved away from government WiFi and now cadets can connect personal devices. Plenty of people with gaming computers/consoles on the WiFi.

Recently the computers have been Dell Latitudes.
