Details for LOR submissions in portal?

DS (2028) is collecting LoRs for nominations and admissions and is in the midst of informing his references what is required.

Our MOCs require that LORs are uploaded to a candidate's nomination application. Easy enough.

Without the candidate application portal open to him yet, DS has no idea how to instruct his references wrt USAFA's LOR requirements. Is it the same process as nomination LORs (uploaded to application), or will references be contacted by USAFA admissions to provide specific information in their LOR?

Character assessments consist of teacher evaluations, a writing sample, letters of recommendation, candidate personal data record, and more.

If your DS has not yet read every page, link and drop-down/hamburger menu item link at the USAFA site, that is an important foundational step. He’ll be able to upload certain documents into the portal. He should take good note from the website content on what the LORs should address, from people who know him well.

The teacher evals are done differently. DS provides email, teachers complete online form.

I’m assuming you’re asking about the 2 optional LORs. For the other ones (Math, Science, Guidance Counselor, etc), I wouldn’t worry about those until the portal opens.

As for the 2 optional LORs, once the portal opens, you will input their name and email address. They will then get an email from USAFA and will send it directly to them. There is nothing specific here, but obviously a well written LOR that details how they know you, how great of a candidate you are, etc. We used the same LORs for our MOC that were submitted to USAFA (but of course changed the TO line.. )

I have my students work with teachers to 'collect' the letters prior to the end of school with the idea that they will coordinate with the teachers over the summer and/or when school reopens in Aug/Sep to request that they complete the online evaluations for USAFA and other SAs. The letters in PDF will often be used with their nominations. The logistics are a bit awkward sometimes, but early is better than waiting if it is managed well. Good luck to your son!

The timing of the LORs and teacher evals is helpful. Trying to get as much prepped and ready as possible before a busy summer!

What if the 2 optional LORs are late? Application is due Nov 1st, does that hold true with the optional LORs? If DS adds two names to his application for the optional LORs and they fail to get the LORs in time, will his application be considered incomplete?

During the Candidate Kit portion, He will enter the names and contact info for each referral, after he submits his kit, they will get an email from USAFA on how to submit their LOR.
