This is not going to be a short term effort. It seems to me to be a pretty delicate balancing act – enough assets to conduct a robust training effort plus security for that effort. This 1000 is on top of the 3000 that are in Iraq now. I wish I could say that I am confident of our success though in this effort. Patching together a cohesive and effective force in Syria and Iraq without a really cohesive governing body will be tough to begin with, and it seems like we usually train them to expect a lot of combat support that probably won’t be available to them if we aren’t around, and finally- given our disappearing act 3 years ago, I don’t think that we are going to have a lot of credibility for a while.
