Hey! I just received an LOA this past week to USNA, but my DODMERB status right now is asking for AMI, and I am “pending disqualification” for a surgery, though I am completely healed from it. I understand that the waiver authorities belong to each respective academy; would having an LOA put me in a favorable position for my medical process, or would it have no effect?

NO -- the LOA at this point in the cycle is typically contingent upon nomination and being medically qualified (which may include a waiver for disqualification). Some medical conditions are simply not waiverable, and an LOA would have no bearing on that determination. (I am not suggesting that your condition isn't waiverable ...reach out to Mr. Mullen on the DODMERB Board if you have questions about that process).

A waiver of the medical standard may be granted if both your academic record and medical history suggest the risk introduced by the disqualifying condition is justified by your potential for success as a midshipman and as a naval officer.

Like @Old Navy BGO said, the main consideration is how much your condition poses a risk to military service and vice versa. If it isn't too late and you're still in touch with the docs that did your surgery, send them the DoDMERB standard for that condition. If they have the specific criteria in front of them, they can speak directly to that instead of in generics.

Does a candidate take more than 1 DoDMerb? My son is, for another SA, completing his DoDMerb but NA hasn't triggered this requirement since the BGO Interview is still not completed (he is trying to set it up and getting no response). If he completes the DoDMerb for another SA would those findings also transfer to the NA similar to the CFA?

No, one DoDMERB. It would be a waste of taxpayer money to repeat it multiple times for separate academies. The exams are accessible as needed by service academies. DoDMERB is a joint service organization. The candidate takes no action.

Thanks that is what we thought but didn't know if each SA had different medical tests

I do know this, since my DD was in a similar situation Not everyone that applies and gets DQ is sent for waiver consideration, that is up to admissions. You got an LOA, congrats! It is a big deal. It may sound rough but if admissions doesn’t consider a candidate to be competitive enough to be offered an appointment they would simply won’t look into a possible waiver. You DO have an LOA!!! Yeah!!!

If a candidate has an LOA, I would highly doubt that the Academy would not review a DQ to see if there is a possible waiver. It could not be received, but I would imagine they would review the file in depth. Even ask for more info (the Academy made my son do a full heart check when he was DQed for a non-issue, and waived the DQ).

Get the AMI in and hope you get the waiver fast before the system gets over loaded. My kid got his waiver for AFROTC in last October and USAFA just reused that info for their waiver and off he went. We were so happy for him because I thought he was no way getting a waiver from any service.
