DoDMERB Disqualification

Hello!

I was just disqualified under DoDMERB for "History of any dislocation, subluxation or instability of the shoulder." This injury was from football, didn't require surgery, and has since fully healed. I am currently deferred to USCGA. Does anyone know if admissions sees this and if it will affect my chances of being offered an appointment? Does the waiver process start now, or only if offers an appointment? Any advice is greatly appreciated. Thank you

My DS got the same disqualification. If you are deemed to be a "highly competitive candidate" USCGA will request a waiver on your behave that will get reviewed by the medical board. My DS did get an email stating they requested a waiver, so you might see that. If a waiver is requested and approved you will see that update in the DoDMERB website.

My son has a conditional appointment. He has a disqualification that will require a waiver. The Coast Guard Academy just sent an email today indicating they would pursue a waiver. I think I read that waivers are only sought for applicants they are interested in appointing. My guess is interest from the academy is at first independent of DoDMERB. I don't think the academy checks dommerb before evaluating your application, but I have no special knowledge.

I have the same problem with my elbow! I was offered a conditional appointment in November then I learned that I was disqualified for history of dislocation subluxation or instability of the elbow from a partial dislocation in 4th grade that has no residual effects. Since I was already offered a conditional appointment my waiver process was immediately started. This was in December. I followed up with the waiver authorities at USCGA last week asking for any update on the status of my waiver investigation and they said they had no information at that time. It’s just a waiting game at this point I think. I’ll make sure to keep you posted on what my timeline winds up being.

USCGA doesn’t wait for DoDMERB to offer an appointment. I got a conditional appointment more than a month before DoDMERB had finished with my tests. Typically a conditional appointment will be offered pending DoDMERB results or for something like a lower than average PFE/ACT/SAT score (I believe you have to be the cream of the crop in every other category to get a conditional based on scores). DoDMERB-related conditional appointments seem to be very common however. If you go take a look at the C/O 2027 appointment thread many of the appointments being offered are labeled DoDMERB conditional at first.

USCGA does not consider DoDMERB when issuing appointments from my experience. A high rate of candidates get DQ'd for medical reasons. My sons year the admission staff had quoted 60% or higher needed waivers. DoDMerb is the initial medical review that is for all the Academies not just USCGA. If USCGA deems a candidate competitive for an appointment then they will begin the waiver process which any AMI or questionnaires go through DoDMERB but the waivers are given by the Academy that offers the appointment. Each waiver is a case by case basis, timewise, likelihood of receiving waiver, etc... My son (basketball recruit) was EA, deferred to RA, conditional CGAS appointment, didn't get waiver until Mid May, and is now 4/c at academy. The process albeit a frustrating one for the applicant, is there for a reason, and works. Any questions feel free to ask as we have been through pretty much all the scenarios, and now currently have a DD that applied last minute, so will go through the process to some extent again🤞
