DoDMERB Question

Hello,

I recently took my DoDMERB a few weeks ago and had a question regarding its relation to USCGA admissions. I recently saw on the DoDMERB website that the agency that requested it was the "US Coast Guard Academy."

Do they request all applicants to take the health exam or just admitted applicants? I haven't been admitted as of now, is this a good sign or does it not mean anything?

Thank you!

It is a good sign as it means you are considered "competitive." Based on what I was told by my previous admissions officers, although you haven't been put forward for an appointment yet you are considered to have potential as a cadet, and therefore ready to begin the medical process.

The DoDMERB review process can be lengthy at times, especially if you need to apply for waivers or conduct remedial exams. Hence why the USCGA initiates the DoDMERB process early in the review period. It does not necessarily mean much and it isn't a stand-alone indicator you will be accepted, but it is a good sign nonetheless.

The DoDMERB process does cost taxpayer money. Most SA's therefore only initiate the process when a certain percentage (it varies by SA), of the appliciation has been completed and the candidate is deemed competitive.

If you have applied to other SA's, the same DoDMERB will be accessible by those academies as well.

Being asked to begin the DoDMERB is nowhere near a guarantee of admission, but you are in the game!

When do you take the DoDMERT is it something that should be done before or after you submit your application? DS received an email 3 weeks ago that his application was going up for review within the next 2 weeks...will he be notified or is this something he should be working on to get done?

You are not permitted to undergo an exam until you are told to. When was the application filed? Should have received an email shortly after filing the application. Check your spam!

I was scheduled for my DoDMERB about 3 days after I submitted my application. From what I understand, the CGA schedules you for the examination once your application is finalized and if they deem you're a competitive applicant.

If your daughter hasn't received it yet, she will probably take it once she gets accepted. I don't believe you can initiate the process yourself.

Thank you for your response, he completed his application first week in January. nothing in junk mail...

You may want to reach out to his AO to ask whether he should have received info on how to start the DODMERB process. First thing he should have received is an email. In the early admission cycle, those emails were going out within two weeks of filing the application. It is possible they are running behind, also possible you missed it somehow.

Ok thank you I will have him do that.

It is also possible that they chose not to have your son undergo a DoDMERB exam. Only applicants deemed competitive for admission after a preliminary review of their application are referred to DoDMERB. Contacting his AO is the next logical step.
