Does AROTC scholarship process consider the preferred schools?

First post, but I've followed this site for a couple of months with great interest. Thank you!

My son has applied and been accepted to VMI - and he is so excited. He wants to commission and has applied for the AROTC scholarship. It's not surprising that he didn't get selected from the first board. He's a good student but not elite. VMI is his first school choice followed by VA Tech. The others are state schools in NC where we live. The cost of VMI (and likely VA Tech) out of state is prohibitive without a 3 or 4 year ROTC scholarship. I'm curious if any consideration is given to the school's on his list when he is evaluated for the AROTC scholarship. I think he'll still contract with Army ROTC if he attends one of his backup schools in NC (NC State or App State) without a scholarship, but he really wants the VMI (1st) or VA Tech (2nd) experience.

Thanks again for the active sharing.

Not sure exactly what you are asking, but the schools that your DS lists on his application have no bearing on IF a scholarship is awarded. Once a candidate is awarded a scholarship, Cadet Command will then review the schools listed and assign the scholarship to a few schools (up to 3 I think). I will also add that in the event your DS is awarded a scholarship to a school that he does not want to attend, Cadet Command is very good with accommodating requests to transfer the scholarship.

Best of luck to your DS!

Thanks. I think that answers my question. (school list has no impact on the board's decision to award a scholarship) I appreciate your response.
