Does my application compensate for my SAT/ACT or vice versa? Kind of a what needs improvement post

My plebe had similar test scores, but since we live in a very rural/small district, access to ECAs and AP Classes were very limited.

I’m sharing this for all the potential candidates reading this thread and already counting themselves out - it’s a wide range of profiles and abilities in each class. Do your best and try not to worry about gaming the process or how you compare to some unknown beast of a candidate.

Correct … a class of cookie cutter candidates is boring …. I pick the kid who isn’t afraid to ride a wild horse or wrestle a steer … or the kid that is a beast on the 88 ivories ..

From experience, I've seen stellar applicants with everything you can imagine, including high test scores, high GPA, lots of ECAs, lots of leadership, multiple varsity letters and captains, nominations, etc. get turned down. Conversely, I have seen people with average stats get appointments. There is no rhyme or reason from this side that you will ever be able to make sense of. Focus on doing the best you can, putting forth the best application possible, getting a nomination, and then securing Plans B and C.

Speaking of plan B -- I think @DrMom said it best "there is no plan B but another great path moving forward (something like that)" One can always make the best of it for what has been given.

Speaking as a novice, DS TD'd 1st time, appointment 2nd time. In his case, I think the variables and intangibles are what made the difference. As noted above, if it was purely based on test scores, GPA's, EC's etc., this would be the SA version of money ball and many, many kids would be left out. There are variables and intangibles. The content of the essays, each one is different. The passion and drive to get there. The discipline and diligence to get there. The sacrifice to get there. The, "I will not be denied" mindset if that's what you want. Leadership capability and ability. How one presents themselves, bearing, do you look the part and carry yourself that way? Let's not forget attention to detail, pay attention to the little things and bigger things will fall into place. Lastly, the interviews. DS was given honest advice and suggestions his first time through. It's a test and you will be tested, especially if it's your second time applying. There are atheletes that do things you just can't teach, that extra something that others don't possess. After DS received his appointment, I wrote, sometimes the answer is yes, no, or not right now. For those who will receive a TD, how much do you want it and what are you doing next?

I think we overlook the competition element. Is it possible you weren’t the winner of the slate the first time around, but are the second time?

If someone had great stats and didn’t get in - did they win their slate?
