I just realized one downside (I’m sure we will find others along the way) to this whole academy thing... just found out in the budget book that DS is going to be considered independent and file his own taxes after joining the academy! That joined with the fact my oldest graduates from civilian college this May means I’m going to have to adjust from 3 dependent deductions down to 1!!! Ouch. Better to realize it now than next year when we’re filing 2018 I guess.

jdawg, Add that he'll have to do his own laundry and pick up his own room on a regular basis too. You're becoming awash in upsides :groupwave:

^^^ Although...I'm pretty sure I heard on a tour at USNA that mids don't do their own laundry or bus their dishes in the chow hall. It's all done for them!

Correct. The mids get their laundry boiled, shrunk, shredded and misplaced by the laundry service, for which I think there is an auto-deduction from their pay. And, it’s good training for when the ship’s laundry sends back uniformly grey underwear instead of white! (Desalinated seawater and industrial soap)

That’s why there are 3 firsties at our house right now doing laundry, working on their laptops/dozing. [emoji16]

You still get to claim him for 2018

There are many threads on mids/cadets and income tax status, as well as points of view that differ. I suggest reading them.

Always did my laundry off the fantail. 75' of shotline through the leg and arm holes, 10 minutes and a quick rinse with fresh water made me good to go for another week give or take [emoji23]

There’s a memory, nice one! It was a great way to get your wash done.

BTCS, I know you will recall water hours. I think that was the one time that being a hole snipe had its perks with a make shift shower off the emergency feed water pump.

Captain MJ,
I can only assume you were the Chang at some point. Do tell please.

Capt MJ,

Maybe you have mentioned it in the past but I didn’t see it but it would appear that you are a host family. I can only base this on the notation that firsties are at your humble abode doing laundry. To that end; that’s a really nice thing to do for those kids. That’s top self skipper....cheers!
