"Doc" Newton enlisted into the U.S. Coast Guard back in 1969, eventually becoming a musician stationed at the Academy. After an honorable discharge from the service, he left the institution briefly to complete graduate work in education and music composition.
In 1975, Doc returned to the Academy where he served for another 46 years, retiring today after five decades of service.
