This is a bit of an odd question. Last year, my DD applied for a summer seminar. She did not get in, but she was going to try again this coming summer. Last Thursday, November 21st, she received an E-candidate packet with a candidate number asking her to have the full packet finished by Jan 31st to put her in the Class of 2029. She reached out to the Blue and Gold officer; however, he was of little help.

Has anyone had the same? Receiving the E-packet so late in the year with only 2 months to complete it?

We are really lost and don't understand. She really wants to attend the USNA and does not want to miss the chance. Any advice would be great.

What grade is she in now?

And by ‘last year’, do you mean summer ‘24?

Have her call admissions Monday (or send an email). Might be an opportunity to start a summer seminar application early. Looks like the applications do not open until January 6.

Enjoy the Thanksgiving. I have my mid (1c) home and a HS senior applying. Time goes fast.

If she’s a senior now and wants to be considered for admission to the class of 2029 at USNA, then she needs to fill out everything required in the application by the deadline set

Also need to fill out stuff for nominations as one is required to be admitted to USNA

I think summer seminar is only for riding high school seniors? And it’s not required for admission

Some clarifying questions.

Did your daughter apply as a rising senior? The Naval Academy summer seminar is for the summer between junior and senior year. Attendees apply as juniors in their second semester.

Or, if her birthday falls such that she would not have been 17 at the time she reported in to USNA in late June, she would not have been eligible to open a pre-application - I think. Is she now in the zone where she would be 17 the summer she would enter USNA?

Cal Admissions!

So that is part of it. She is homeschooled. She has already graduated and is attending community college, taking classes just because she has the time. She is 16 but will be 17 very soon, so she is eligible.

Thanks, she will do that. Have a happy and Blessed thanksgiving.

She was homeschooled. She has graduated and is taking classes at our local community college. She will be 17 soon.

Okay then. She was eligible to apply for USNA Class of 2029 anytime this past year, as soon as the application portal opened. She has her HS degree in hand and she meets the age requirement to enter this summer.

Most Class of 2029 candidates got their applications started this past spring or summer:
- getting transcripts, teacher evaluations, test scores and essays moving (many homeschoolers apply and are accepted, Admissions knows how to work with these applicants)
- getting enough submitted so that their DoDMERB medical review was initiated
- knocking out their CFA test
- applying for nominations from Senators, Representative and VP, and any others she is eligible for.

Though she could hustle and get everything else going by the 1/31/25 application closure date for Class of 2029, the nominations piece would be a challenge. Most of the MOC nom application deadlines were late summer, and decisions are being/have been made. If she has eligibility for any service-connected nomination, that is given to anyone eligible, as long as they apply before deadline.

Naval Academy Summer Seminar (NASS) is intended as an outreach program for rising HS seniors. It is not a required precursor. It does open a preliminary application for the next cycle. Most USNA midshipmen dd not attend NASS. The application portal for Class of 2030 will open late spring 2025.

Ah - I see she is taking community college classes. This is what she needs to read:

Also of interest:

I think the Class of 2030 is the logical focus for her. If she has not yet read every page, link and menu item on USNA.edu, most answers are there.

A call to Admissions, the primary source, is always prudent.

Thank you. That is what I was thinking, her waiting one more year. She has read everything and does qualify for the presidential nomination. She put that in this past Monday. She also put in for the vice-presidential nomination already.

She is really trying. I would rather her wait, but I also don't want to hold her back. I am wondering about just getting the packet so late. She has three friends who are putting in for the USNA, and they got theirs quite a while ago.

I will look at the pages you pasted. I know 2 of them we have already read. The college one we have not yet. Or at least I have not.

Thank you so much. Glad to be here. I have learned quite a bit waiting to get approved to be on here. Have a great and Blessed Thanksgiving.
The same to you. She has plenty of time in terms of eligibility to apply, age-wise. She can’t be 23 when she enters, I think. A good portion of each incoming class at service academies are not fresh out of HS. I encourage her to explore the other 4 federal service academies as well as Navy, Air Force and Army ROTC scholarship and non-scholarship programs, if the goal is to serve as a commissioned officer.

We have tried to get her to apply to the others. We have family in the Army and the Navy, but like her father, she is Navy. She loves the water, both on top and under. At 16, she is 2 classes away from Master Diver and has more sailing experience than anyone we know. But we will keep trying. Thank you for your help.

NROTC at a civilian college is a great route to a commission in the Navy too!

She can go Navy out of USMMA, either active duty or Reserve, and sail commercial on her license. Many options there.

She can also reach out to the USNA sailing coach.

And, go to NavySports.com to look at inter-collegiate and off-shore sailing teams.

That I don't think she knew about. Thank you again for all the great information.

FYI, I was a varsity intercollegiate sailor at USNA and after graduation I coached the Plebes. Decades later, my son
was also a varsity sailor. While you don't need to be specific, how many major regional/national events has she competed in?
Specific One Design experience/titles?
I'm trying to get a sense of how much the coaches might be interested.

She has not really competed. She has been a Sea Scout for about four years now and has been the captain of her boat for two years. They do have three small sailboats they race, but that is for fun, not competition. Their main boat is a 42-foot sailboat. She knows every part of it and is very proficient at sailing it.
