Eating disorder DQ policy?

Hello,

My daughter is currently a freshman in high school who is set on attending USNA. She has a 4.0 GPA, is taking all honors classes and two APs, is involved with several extracurriculars including varsity sports, scored in 99th percentile for PSATs, and overall has many positive aspects for a competitive candidate. However, she had an eating disorder (other unspecified - EDNOS) in the sixth grade when she was twelve years old. She has completely recovered with no relapse; it has already been almost three years. I've read on the medical examination PDF from the academy's website that history of eating disorders is an automatic disqualification, but have also read on other threads that it is only harmful if it occurred after the thirteenth birthday. Would anyone be able to clarify the DQ policy regarding eating disorders, including regarding the thirteenth birthday and possibility of waivers? My daughter was planning on taking NJROTC next year but wanted to refocus her plans if admission would be impossible due to her history with the disorder.

Thank you so much for all your help! We really appreciate it.

This is what I believe to be the current accession standard, start on p. 44:

Many things are an automatic DQ by DODMERB, but individual SAs may initiate a waiver process. If it is one of the waiverable conditions under whatever policy applies a few years down the road, the key will be the documentation of non-recurrence, maintaining normal weight, etc.

The accession bar for medical issues is set high, for many reasons. The needs of the individual Services are also major drivers.

There is no way of knowing for sure. Let’s hope others with current experience with this situation offer some insight. Browse the DODMERB thread and other forums using the Search box.

If this is truly her dream, she should shoot for it, but as you have probably read here, develop Plans B through whatever seems right.
