DS is currently a last semester MSIV. He went to Advanced Camp last summer and unfortunately suffered an injury and couldn't complete camp. As a result, he will go back to camp this summer and be an end of camp commissioning. I have been trying to understand how it will work but he's been light on the details explaining that he has a meeting with his PMS when he returns to school. I am hoping this forum can give me a baseline understanding of what is likely to happen.

For context, DS is a 3.1 gpa student and Company Commander. He has been told by his Cadre that they recommended active duty, that he's active duty qualified and he's above the active duty cut line. His first 3 branch choices are, Armor (with BRADSO) Infantry (with BRADSO) and FA. My questions are these:

  • How are AD slots allocated for end of camp commissioning (I understand that there are 120 end of camp commissioning this summer?
  • Do folks commissioning at the end of camp have the same odds of getting their choices as if they had completed camp last summer?
  • Does commissioning actually happen right after Advanced Camp graduation?
Thanks in advance for any guidance this forum can provide.

I believe that the commissioning can be after camp or at the college at a later date. Our school had 3 cadets who went to advanced camp after graduating college. 2 (both went reserves) commissioned the following fall at the school, and I don’t know when the third (went AD) commissioned. my son said that some cadets did commission right after (at) camp.

The AD cadet received her branch (1st choice, I believe) along with the MSIVs in November. I don’t know if there is a separate pool for those who commission after camp and those who are regular MSIVs, but she found out her branch with the seniors.

Advanced Camp performance is an input measure in determining where one will branch/ serve after commissioning.

Eastern Washington's university official ROTC site has a nice overview of the talent based process that Army has evolved to use in very recent years -has your son already gone through this/ had the interviews? Recommend you review that to understand the process your MSIV will go through to get feedback/ best understand their options of where they will serve. This process should help him both declare his preferences and also to get feedback on which area(s) are mutually interested in him joining them.

In terms of sequence/ timing, I only have one example where an AROTC MSIV graduated in May of 2023 but did not commission after a mechanical injury in Summer '22 prevented that person from completing advanced camp. They healed/returned/ completed Advanced Camp this past summer, and then a Fall 2023 solo commissioning ceremony was held back at their university - just for them and their family, by a few members of the cadre, a few members of the unit attended only - it was outside their ROTC building in a courtyard with each branch's flags, the American flag and was brief - maybe 15 mins total followed by a first salute, etc. Person was given service selection assignment / branch assignment before the ceremony (aviation in this case) but I'm not sure exactly when.

Good luck to your son as he finishes his last semester, then advanced camp, then begins serving as an officer. Please let us know if you confirm the sequence/ cadence of how he'll commission, get his assignment, as these details would be helpful for others in a similar position. Hope this helps.
