Haha you don’t need to be an E6 above to get commission
. Btw, I’m an e5.
Sir, you mind asking what designator you are and how’s your prior E experience?
One should never try to explain (an obviously bad) joke. lol
One of my kid brothers worked his way up thru the Enlisted Rates and made Chief and Retired as a Lieutenant Limited Duty Officer.
Because I was a Petty Officer 3/C when I entered the Naval Academy
he joked that I was too dumb to succeed as an Enlisted man so they had to make me an Officer.
I likely can not offer you help in specific current details as to applying to the SAs, but I can explain what worked for me. I attempted to get into Annapolis as a Junior/Senior in High School. I was recruited as a two sport athlete, but took the lead in attempting to enter the Academy with help from the coaches and the Assistant Director of Athletics.
I received an Alternate Appointment from a Congressman. I did not make it in - they explained that I had no extra curriculum activities outside of sports. My HS grades were good, my SATs were very good, including an 800 in Math and IIRC a 740 in Verbal.
At age 17 I enlisted and Completed Training and advanced to E-4 as an Electronics Technician 3/C. Meanwhile, I was contacting that Congressman that had gave me the Alternate Appointment. I also contacted my Home State (NJ) MOC and both Senators.
The fact that I had enlisted I believe was an important reason the Congress members all saw my intense desire to attend Navy! I took various Civil Service Exams for those four congressmen, could attend no interviews, did not have to re-take the SATS, and there was no calisthenics test in those days.
I did not apply for a Presidential Appointment -
my bad. I made it clear that I would not be interested in attending NAPS - Prep School -
again my bad!
That Congressman that had given me the Alternate Appointment when I was in HS, gave me a Principal Appointment. The NJ Delegation gave an Alternate Appt to USNA. one to West Point, and one to USMMA.
All I had to do was pass the Physical and figure out how to get the Navy to figure how to convert a Letter from a Congressman addressed to me into Military Orders transporting me and paying me to get to Annapolis for Swearing in.
While Attending the Academy, I was in what was called
Dual Service - I was simultaneously a Petty Officer Third class, USN, and also I was Midshipman, USN. Had I flunked out, my time at the Academy would have counted toward retirement and pay and I would have reverted to my Enlisted status only. I graduated four years later and received an Honorable Discharge from my Enlisted status on the day I was Sworn in as an Ensign.
I competed in one sport at the Varsity Level includin the only Navy National Championship in that sport - and quit the second sport to better attend to my grades. I wore Stars for my last three years being on the Superintendent's and Dean's Lists. Prior to quitting the second sport, I did terribly in academics as a Plebe. My focus was the Military Aspects of the Plebe System.
The Late Admiral Rickover accepted me into the Naval Nuclear Power Program - I went into Submarines again as I had done as an Enlisted man.
Admiral Rickover, a tough man to work for some times, took me under his Wing until he Retired... at which point I also retired.
If you are an Enlisted Man that wishes to attend a SA, I can not emphasize too much the need to explore all possibilities and don't you dare for a minute feel that somehow your competition is better than you. You need to absolutely pursue all options.
My mistakes including refusing to consider other SAs. I would have succeeded as a Woo Poo, or as a Coastie, or as a Zoomie, or in the Merchant Marine. If you don't believe that of yourself, you need to reassess your talents! I should have also been open to Prep School.
These SAs, while maybe not for everyone, but they produce the sharpest, most honorable graduates I can imagine!
Men and women, both.
Beat Army!
