Can I use basically the same essay that I used for my Summer Seminar essay in my USAFA Application? It is the same question - describing a setback that you faced and how you resolved it.

Some differences as you will note:
AFASS - Please discuss any personal life experience where you have overcome adversity or challenges that have shaped you into the person you are today? (3000 characters max)
AFA Cand. Kit - Describe a setback or ethical dilemma that you have faced. How did you resolve it? How did the outcome affect you? Most importantly, what did you learn about yourself and how would you handle a similar situation in the future? (3000 characters)

Was your adversity/challenge a 'setback' for you? Maybe semantics, but be sure to address all of the prompts clearly. Good luck with your writing.

Thank you for your response!

Google "Hack the College Essay 2017"
That document will tell you to "Write the Essay only you could write"
That is, don't write something generic that 50 other people could write it (e.g., I didn't make the team freshman year but worked hard and made it sophmore year).

The prompt is very similar, but I would recommend broadening it out a lot more for the actual USAFA application. This is the real deal, and you want to maximize the potential for admissions to view you as an applicant, which is significantly done through the essays.

At the very least go over your old one with a fine toothed comb and see if there's anything new you can add since you wrote it. Never skip a chance to review and revise, especially when there's a chance your two documents might be compared. Show that you made an effort even if you want to use the same experience for both essays.

Every word counts, both good and bad. Not only are you answering the question as only you could, but you are also demonstrating writing, grammar, and spelling skills, as well as being able to communicate in an organized, well-thought-out manner. Write your own essay, but have it reviewed, by several people. One for grammar (think English teacher), another perspective for "Did you answer the question?", and yet another for fluff and wasted words. The essay is an important part of the app. With respect to the "optional" essay, there is no such thing! Use every opportunity you are given to make your case.

A question that comes up every year is the character count (or word count for other essays). These are hard numbers, there are no exceptions.

Does anyone know if the admissions teams looks at both essays, because I was thinking it might be better to broaden the first essay if they only see the candidate kit, but it might also be better to write about something else if they see both?
