Exchange

If I were a 4/c cadet at the coast guard academy, what would I have to do over the next 2 years to be able to go on an exchange to the naval academy for the first semester of my 2/c year? does major choice matter?

Get good grades, get good evals. Major does play a role in that some majors have course requirements that can only be fulfilled at certain Academies so you are limited in your choices.

BR and LITS gave you the two most important pieces of advice. I'm interested in going on exchange next year so I've been working towards that go. I'll PM you

By the time 2/c year rolled around, you might even rather stay at CGA. My classmates, across the board, enjoyed their exchange time, but appreciated CGA much more following their look at other academies....by 2/c year it kind of feels like home (which is a sad thought for some.)

I've told this one before, but my son had a kid from USNA room with him during his exchange semester at CGA and ended up being commissioned in the Coast Guard.

Girl from USNA class of 2004 did the same thing. She's at CGHQ now, enjoying her career in the Coast Guard.

So that's why they only have a max of 5 exchangers per semester come to CGA from USNA

I'm really hoping to go on exchange next year. Just need to dig deep this semester and get the necessary academic, military, and physical standing to be eligible.

D.D. is currently on exchange at USAFA and LOVES it! She joined the mountaineering club and climbed Eagle Peak and went horse back riding this weekend. They even hooked her up with a Coast Guard Sponsor Family which she really enjoys. The cherry on the Sunday is she also got Power Flight this semester. If all the planets fall into alinement, an exchange experience can be very rewarding.

Not to mention, we sent a LOT of shipmates over to Air Force with her this semester and next for that matter. It's impressive the most we've ever had in years. In short, though don't worry so much about going on exchange just yet. You've still got time. Just keep your nose to the grindstone, get into the Academy and do well and somewhere around the middle of 3/c year, start re-evaluating if you want to do the exchange. Thats your time to start looking into it and really take a look around at what your options are. If you're working hard all along, it will be easy.
