Anyone have or know of someone who has experience applying to USNA from the fleet? My son was a very hopeful class of ‘27 applicant, who was unfortunately turned down in April. He was still committed to serving, so chose to enlist, however, USNA is still his goal. He has been chosen for the Nuke Program, and will be applying again for the class of ‘28, and the class of ‘29, if necessary. I guess I'm just hoping to connect with someone who may be able to provide knowledge on what this entails. Thank you!!

There are always applicants from nuke school, so no one will be surprised.

As always, USNA.edu, his primary source, is the place for him to start researching:

Additionally, there is a dedicated USNA Admissions counselor for enlisted applicants, the Fleet Liaison, usually a senior chief petty officer. He can call and ask for contact info.

The career counselor at the schoolhouse should also be a good resource.

Finally, he should be a model sailor, not one conduct slip, no alcohol-related incidents, top grades, impeccable in uniform, can-do attitude, volunteers for the crap jobs.

There have been several threads on SAF ..full of good advice. Most important is along the lines of CAPT MJ's last comment -- excel in all endeavors, but avoid making it appear that you gunning for Annapolis.

They screen Nuke School students for this. Your DS should be prepared to raise his hand and put in another application. Many priors come out of the nuke school pipeline.

I'd say there was an incredibly high proportion of my NAPS class that came from the Nuke school. I think most of the Navy priors were from there.
My group of four friends when enlisted (1999-2001), three of us commissioned, one through USNA. A lot of priors are nukes because academic success in nuke school nearly ensures academic success in college, so your experience doesn't surprise me.

They'll make him earn it. Anecdotal but a good example:

With how academic the nuclear power environment is, there's a lot of officer interest within the enlisted population. Within my total class there was sufficient commissioning interest that leadership arranged for the SAT to be administered in the school house.

~50 of us signed up to take the SAT and when did they schedule it? 0600 on a Saturday.

After a brutal week of academics, maybe 20 of us actually showed up that morning. I was so tired from the curriculum that I fell asleep during the SAT at one point.
