Eye appointment scheduled too late

I know I am very late on DoDMERB - long story. I’ve already completed my medical exam and everything went great there but I will be DQ’d no matter what for a recent surgery. Nothing uploaded about that in my portal yet. I scheduled an eye appointment earlier but unfortunately that didn’t work out. The next available eye appointment was May 22nd which seems too late. Not sure what to do now. I’m reloading the eye place’s page every day to search for cancellations but I doubt any will pop up soon enough. Should I call and explain to USAFA that I can’t get eye exam in time? Request a change in exam location in my portal?

It’s getting very tricky because I know I will be medically DQ’d and am just hoping for a waiver. But (I think) I need to finish my eye exam to be DQ’d and start the waiver process.

At this point I think it is highly unlikely that I will get a waiver in time and my doctors will approve for me to attend basic. So I am continuing with DoDMERB partly in the hopes that I will miraculously be able to attend this year, but partly to show my commitment to USAFA for if/when I apply next year.

Contact your assigned DoDMERB technician on 2 things:

- You have to inform them of a change in your medical history, so they can tell you next steps and what’s needed. No sense in putting that off. As in, tomorrow.
- Ask if they have any alternate eye providers in your area. They might steer you back to DoDMETS to coordinate that.

Worst case, if you end up a DQ with no waiver for this year, and want to re-apply next year, your DoDMERB is good for 2 years. You just have to update with new info in the DA and any other changes to your medical history.

Your DoDMERB POC is in Contacts on home page.

I did step 2 last week and I have an appointment at a new location on Monday. But I misread what you said for step 1. I thought you meant to inform the SA of medical update (which I’ve done). The surgery is from before I submitted my DoDMERB packet - i.e. it’s already been noted in my medical questionnaire and at my exam. Should I still talk to DoDMERB about it and next steps?

The point is to ensure DoDMERB is aware. If they are, all good.

Good luck on your eye appointment! I hope you won’t be medically disqualified!
