I checked my portal today and saw I received a Civil Prep Appointment. I have already been accepted to Marion Military Institute, so I will be attending there this fall. I have a few questions about this, but have tried to read on the subject as much as I can.

Should I retake the SAT while I am there even though I read that as long as the individual behaves and maintains a B average they will likely receive an appointment? I would like to know this because if I do not have to retake the SAT I would like to focus on hard classes I know I will be forced to confront while I’m there.

Secondly, will I receive some sort of certificate from USMA for this? Or is it only going to show on my portal?

Thank you all for your help these past two years. The advice on these forums have helped me so much and I cannot express how grateful I truly am!!

It will only show up on your portal, as that is what it did for me. In regard to the SAT (Or ACT), you are required to retake one of the test at least once during your time at Marion under the AOG obligation that you sign.

I’m assuming I will need to apply for a nomination again. Is that correct?

That is correct - part of your application from this year will transfer over as well, such as personal information, but you will need to resubmit essays and acquire your 8th semester transcripts. Your DoDmerb will be good for this coming year as well so you will not need to redo it.

Did you get to choose which civil prep you attended? And, did you get the next step after civil prep?

Yes, all the colleges approved for civil prep leave spots reserved specifically for scholars. However, I had already applied to Marion Military Institute months before I received the appointment and was going to attend there if I wasn’t appointed to the class of 2024 this year. I’m not sure what you mean by your second question, but I have been told I basically need to show I can handle the academic rigors, complete my application again, have no behavioral issues and I should most likely be appointed next year for the class of 2025.
