Hello All -

My Daughter has shown interest in the Service Academies since she was in Middle school. Now she is a Junior in High School and she received an invite for CVW. After applying she was accepted and will be there for April 25-27 CVW. So this process we understand, however, she also received a phone call from a USNA Officer asking her to apply for the SS.

After reading a few posts on this forum, it appears that for 2019 you can do either CVW or SS but not both?

Is this normal to get a phone call to invite?

Thank you in advance for any replies.

Applications for summer seminar closed April 5th. Which was an extension of their prior deadline. I haven’t seen another extension. When was she called? And was it from USNA admissions? Or perhaps a Blue and Gold Officer (BGO)?

Yes new this year is the information shared that candidates will not be invited to attend both. Somewhere there was a directive quoted from a source. Not recalling where I saw that.

Keep in mind people here are not USNA admissions. And the general thought is that admissions can do what they want. And no one here is (admittedly) from USNA admissions. But you are correct that it’s one or the other this year. BTW I have t actually seen a post from someone who either 1) has both this spring and/or 2) has received a call asking them to pick one or the other.

Welcome! Lots of GREAT people here. Lots of knowledge and experience!

Apply! If she is interested. NASS is different type of experience, and the more information, the better. Both CVW and NASS are tools to let the USNA and prospects learn more about each other.

Yes, there has been some indication this year that they were trying to spread the wealth, but both tools belong to Admissions, and they can use them as they wish. Admissions can call whom they wish. There is a whole range of “normal” actions that can go into building each class at every stage.

If she’s interested, she should apply.

She was offered CVW on Jan 28th and Accepted Feb 1st. She received a phone call from USNA Admissions (Not BGO) approx. March 25th and told her to Apply before April 1 even though Applications close on April 15th. No word on acceptance to NASS.

Thank you for the reply... on a side note it really did surprise me as I thought she wanted West Point. "IF" she ever makes it ARMY/NAVY game will become very interesting at our house.

^ This. The official word is that Candidates will "not normally" be offered NASS and the April/May CVW's, and you may be asked to choose one or the other. It is not clear whether this will extend to Fall CVW's. Use of words like "not normally" leaves Admissions alot of discretion, and they will use it.

As a general rule, be careful about trying to read too much into any action by Admissions with regard to CVW and NASS. By all means, if you get invited , attend, but if you don't -don't sweat it.

Good luck. NASS was important for my DS in his decision to attend. He knew he wanted to attend. It was the academic visit that told him he COULD attend (as in gave him the confidence that he could manage the academic side). They are both awesome experiences.

Great advice! She is definitely going to CVW! Flights already booked and a Hotel for me as I want to take part in Parent meetings. Not too worried about NASS, but if she gets invited it she will go. We are on the West Coast so lots of air miles could be racked up in this discovery process. Like all the parents on this Forum, we are very proud of these kids ambitions.

Sometimes a taste of salt can be addictive and refreshing. We have sponsored a lot of USNA mids over the years whose parents have been in other services, are currently AD other services, as well as plenty of sons and daughters of other SA grads. The mids like the idea of uniformed service but choose a different path than parents. We sponsored two daughters of “Colonel Mom,” USAF, who shook her head in amusement but enjoyed the Navy slang, her visits to Naptown, and showed great pride when she administered both the plebe oath and commissioning oath to her daughters. They both went Marine ground, which caused further bemusement.

Good choice. My DS thought that attending a CVW was wonderful. He came back pretty pumped up.

Quick question. How are Juniors, who haven’t submitted a Summer Seminar application getting CVW invitations? I guess I am confused...how were these folks found by USNA that early in the process? Eldest DS went to a CVW his senior year, but I am just curious as to how Juniors are identified prior to even opening a NASS application. Is it from opening up a preliminary questionnaire of some sort?

I think if they previously attended a STEM camp they were invited. My DD went to a CVW in Feb and ran into a couple of friends from her STEM camp.

I believe it was from preliminary information received on her STEM application from last year.

I have never attended any programs put on by the academy, however I have visited twice and attended multiple service academy days for government officials in my state. I am just assuming since I have gotten my name out there by attending such things that they know I have an interest in the academy, the invitation to my CVW was a pleasant surprise in my inbox. I will be attending on April 25-27 also!

And presumably, you provided them your information. Email, address etc. Another way they can find out about you is through standardized testing. There is an Interest survey test takers provide (at least on the ACT). DS is receiving college info from that.

In my 11th grade son's case, the CVW invite had to be from his STEM application information. He was denied 3 years in a row - but was happy to get the CVW! May have been driven by very strong PSAT scores.

Actually, my DD did have pretty strong PSAT scores too... so maybe that was the case. She told me she did not apply for NAVY STEM, she actually applied for AIR FORCE STEM, so I stand corrected. -- I am just curious, as she is driven and does much (actually all) of this herself. I am on the boards to get more information so I can at least speak with her about it. haha

My DS's BGO has been the catalyst. We knew about BGOs from reading a couple of books we found on Amazon when DS first announced in 8th grade that he "is going to USNA". We found the BGO list via USNA website. DS emailed his BGO in October of 8th grade and he has been our guide through the whole process. Ryan had already been to a soccer camp at USNA and BGO suggested applying for STEM camp. He urged Ryan to attend all of the Service Academy and ROTC events organized by the branches and MOCs. Those have been great--good opportunity for DS to meet mids, cadets and ROTC recruiters. Then asked if DS wanted to go do a CVW in fall of junior year, so BGO wrote a recommendation and we went in October. BGO reminded him that NASS app opened in January and DS is there, right now. DS updates BGO on major events like end of semester grades, SAT/ACT milestones. Perhaps biggest contribution was in backing my husband and I up on having well developed plan B and C, ready to deploy if the Needs of the Service did not include DS. BGO also nudged/pushed to visit WP and USAFA. We were just contacted by the Army parallel of the BGO and are meeting him in early July. My heart goes out to those of you who have not had a mentor going through this....it's not easy and it does help to have reassurance that DS is doing everything he can. "No, thank you" from SAs is fine if DS did everything possible to get in, but it would be tough to swallow an "if only we had known" regret this time, next year.

.
Our daughter is a Lacrosse player, and she attended Lacrosse camps at the USNA every summer since the 8th grade. She also runs XC and has done crew locally and at the USNA camp in the summer. .... She also sent her SAT scores in from the 10th and 11th grade which were very good scores.
.
She started getting calls and emails early on in the process .... She also did CVW because she got a call to come.
.
I suppose they somehow build a file on the kids.
.
She is going to NAPS this summer.
