CC's and Parents,

I just recently completed the first semester of my West Point experience and have some extra time over leave to answer any questions specific to what I have been through so far (CBT & academic year). Please feel free to ask away.

I ask that you limit admissions questions--I am no expert on what will get you an appointment, but I am an expert on being a Plebe.

Thanks for doing this!

What was the most unexpected thing you experienced during Beast? How do you wish you would have prepared differently? (or how you did prepare if you wouldn't have changed anything)

What gives you the most happiness there? And what has been the most challenging and/or give the most discouragement?

I find the most happiness in my friends and in my activities outside of schoolwork--if you don't participate in a club it is easy to get lost in the piles of homework we get. I haven't had much trouble with academics so far which seems to be the main struggle of many of my peers, however I have struggled a bit with the social adjustment. I was always friends with older kids in high school and plebes are flat out not allowed to do that unless they are on the same team/club as said upperclassman. A combination of that and watching my friends who went to "normal" schools have a lot of fun on weekends (and waste a lot of time and money) while I sit and do work is also tough. But I wouldn't trade it for anything else.

I knew pretty well what to expect from Beast after doing a lot of research and talking to other cadets in terms of discipline and yelling and whatnot. I didn't expect a lot of the cool stuff we got to do--shooting M240's, rappelling, grenades, much more--that made CBT a unique experience. If I was to do it again, I would've broken in my boots better to condition my feet, packed less and run more. I focused more on improving strength than cardio, which hurt. I was expecting it to be a whole lot worse, however.

Don't bother rucking ahead of time, packing your whole closet, or worrying about what color your underwear is.

What do you know about the combative and martial arts clubs, are they competitive to enter in?

Are cadets allowed to wear costumes on Halloween?
I actually visited on Halloween. I don't know about the official rules, but there were a few people dressed up. Mainly for the "haunted houses", though, which were really cool (dark locker rooms with decorations and cadets popping out from hidden corners)!!

Do the female plebes seem to be well integrated with the males (vs.sticking together?). I haven’t found much to read about the female experience?

I have had very few issues with sexism in general here. It does exist, but those who contribute are in the minority. I'd say the vast majority of male cadets are more supportive of female's success than those outside of West Point. Female cadets do tend to bond especially well since we are few in numbers, however I have many male friends. You will be led by male and female cadets and will ultimately lead male and female cadets & soldiers, and everyone is accepting of that. Feel free to PM me if you have any specific questions about the female experience; it isn't that different.

How easy was it to make friends/establish relationships with people?

Beast is very conducive to close relationships just because of the environment. I feel like I know a lot of my friends that I've had since R-Day longer than a lot of my friends from back home. After Beast joining clubs is the best way to do it.

What is are the best clubs for mountaineering or outdoor survival types?

I know we have a mountaineering club, climbing club, fishing, hunting, lots of shooting, etc. You can find the full list here: https://www.westpoint.edu/military/directorate-of-cadet-activities/clubs

Are cadets allowed to wear costumes on Halloween?

This is a very specific question, haha. This is largely company-dependent--in my company we were allowed to wear costumes for our Halloween Party (but not to class, or anything like that).

How much of an influence or mentor do the prior-enlisted cadets act to you?

It depends a lot. I do not have any prior plebes in my company, however I do have upperclassmen who make good resources when talking about leadership perspectives. They also help structure training. A prior enlisted cadet helped me a lot during CBT with some tasks that were menial to her, and offered some guidance about the Army in general. A lot depends on the company, and a lot depends on the individual prior. From my perspective they can make the best or worst cadets depending on their attitude. When you come in, make sure you have the right mindset, others will have great respect for your background so long as you don't try to make others seem inferior because their path was different; this goes both ways.

What do you know about the combative and martial arts clubs, are they competitive to enter in?

We have a combatives club that is easy to get involved in if you like early wakeups, along with boxing, judo, fencing, kendo, taekwondo, and karate/martial arts. Boxing and judo are more competitive to enter into but they all offer tryouts. Here is the full list of clubs: https://www.westpoint.edu/military/directorate-of-cadet-activities/clubs

Thank you offering up this thread! Three quesitons:
1) You mention breaking in boots.....can you share what type you purchased and from where?
2) Did you take the ASVAB during CBT and if so, did you prepare ahead of time?
3) Is the academy now using the 'new' ACFT and do you test during CBT?
Thanks

This is kinda random but, what class/classes of west point graduates are expected to be issued the Army's new pink and green uniform?

I'm also a female plebe. I don't know exactly what you mean by being well integrated vs sticking together, but to be honest I easily forget how skewed the male:female ratio is. I've found it equally easy to make friends with the guys and the girls, and I feel that I am viewed as an equal. This is not a problem I would worry about.

1) I recommend Garmont T8 Bifidas for Beast, they are on the authorized list. You can get them online or at the Cadet Store once you get an appointment.
2) No, you do not. It is for enlisted personnel only.
3) USMA is rolling out the ACFT during this coming semester and abandoning the APFT. You will take the ACFT during Beast (do not worry if you do not pass it the first time).

I do not know for sure as I am not going to be commissioning anytime soon, however I do know that this class (2020) was originally going to commission in the uniform and now is not. I imagine that 2021 will. I definitely will.
