I was recently having breakfast with DS and a few of his 2018 USCGA classmates. I asked one of his friends if he was planning on staying on after his 5 year obligation. He said he was planning on at least 8 so that he would have full advantage of the GI Bill.

Can anyone explain how this works?

VA.gov has the info.

DoD SA and ROTC grads have to do an additional 36 months of AD after they complete their initial ADSO, whatever that is, to be eligible for 100% of Post 9/11 GI Bill benefits or its later versions. Partial eligibility for <100% can be earned.

I could swear there was some loophole that USCGA grads didn’t have this. Maybe it got closed up. Someone here will know.

Given the ongoing updates and refinements to this benefit, I usually post only va.gov or a .mil site. There are many other non-profit sites, military.com sites, etc., which provide good overviews but are not official sources.

The first 5 years AD are paying back your degree from the service academy. To earn full amount of GI Bill benefits you need 3 years AD, but the first 5 years of AD don’t count. You need 3 more. That’s where the 8 years comes from.

Here are the rates for time after ADSO:
  • 36+ months: 100%
  • Between 30 months and 36 months: 90% of the full benefit
  • Between 24 months and 30 months: 80% of the full benefit
  • Between 18 months and 24 months: 70% of the full benefit
  • Between 6 months and 18 months: 60% of the full benefit
  • Between 90 days and 6 months: 50% of the full benefit

The VA Educational Assistance Improvement Act of 2010 removed the CGA Exemption. ALL ROTC and SA Grads must serve their ADSO prior to commencing VA Educational Service Time.

The only caveats are Purple Heart Recipients get 100% of their VA educational benefits no matter their service time, and Medically Discharged veterans (sometimes) can get waivers for GI Bill, but usually fall under VR&E (Voc Rehab).
