For those who attended SLE already, and also did the overnight visit... is an overnight visit by invitation necessary?
Reason for asking... limited/lack of budget for the overnight visit... I already had the SLE experience.
Assuming... the only difference is classroom didactical experience while school is in session.
I also visited WP as a tour while classes were in session.

So, again... what additional experience will an overnight visit provide since I've been to WP twice?

IMO, the invited overnight visit that resulted from the LOE was part of the appointment calculus. Although, I can't prove that. Just a feeling because DS1's appointment came days after his overnight visit.

Wow, that would be nice. DS is going in early March, due to fall/winter sport schedules that haven't allowed him to get away until then. Would love to see an appointment soon thereafter (or before would be great too!). He is 3Q plus a nomination.

Overnight visits allow you to go to classes, talk to cadets (not just SLE cadre) and speak with an admissions officer.

I do not want to sound cynical, but SLE presents a positively skewed view on cadet life in order to encourage applications. I know several cadets who have outprocessed, even having attended, because West Point wasn't what they thought it was going to be. Overnights are the best cross-section of cadet life, because you experience how strenuous a full day here really is. You will also have more time to speak with Plebes (if you have a good escort they will offer you the chance to ask any upperclassmen questions), experience Plebe duties, go to more meals, see the average amount of homework a night, etc.

I definitely recommend it if you are able. Not the end of the world if you are not, just do your research and know what you're getting into.

Same situation here - DS visiting in late February due to State Soccer and Football commitments late into last fall. As he's 3Q plus nom we are hopeful the visit will result in good news (if not beforehand!).

Yes, I submitted a post on this earlier as well. I suspect it is used to evaluate them in some way or another. My DS is doing an overnight later this month and is 3Q+nom. We hope that the visit helps to solidify his choice and to make a difference towards an appointment.

Not to say anyone is right or wrong, but to ease OP's mind. My cadet was invited for an overnight visit and did not go and yet he still received an appointment. I do not believe that attending the overnight visit will change your WCS and make you more likely to get accepted. Do not worry about not being able to go, especially if money is an issue.

Yes, please do not feel that you have to accept the overnight visit to be deemed more competitive. I think the @Dadx4 situation is more of a coincidence than an "appointment calculus". LOEs typically go out months prior to due date for applications and nominations so it would be impossible to correlate the two.
