Currently finishing up my fourth class year at VMI, any advice or insight as how VMI compares to USMA from anyone who has done the same thing I am doing?

I know a person who's girlfriend did a year at VMI and then came to USMA. She said it was much better, even as a plebe, then VMI. Less hazing, but the academics were tougher. She seems to like it here a lot more (and she doesn't really talk about VMI all that often).

I had two buddies do the change from VMI to USNA... Same assessment. They both said it was better training with a purpose, less hazing and the academics were much tougher. Even after two Plebe Years, they both said they were happy they made the change. Heck one was a Navy reservists... So he had boot camp in there too!

Hey now lets not go knocking VMI, it's one hell of a place here and it will change you forever for the better if you accept it. But thanks for the the feedback!

Sorry Pattonpart2, as a new member you will find that I have a crass sense of humor that some just don't appreciate at all! He did say that, but it really was just a joke. I am originally from Va, and My Husband's family line is a Va first Family, as in their roots there go all the way back to before the revolutionary war. We love VMI! (Hey my Grandson's name is Jackson) My husband and I used to drive up there on the weekends just to visit the campus.

Isn't part of the whole VMI pride in it's toughness?

But when push came to shove, even though VMI offered my son a 4 yr scholarship, they couldn't cover the room and board. So with 5 kids to put through college it wasn't a really hard decision, and he was off to USNA.

I can assure you that we here at VMI are very proud of what we go through, even if we have to pay for it. I hope to carry that with my to USMA, again thanks for the feedback and your son was probably right, why do we all pay for this abuse?

The one thing to remember for priors, ROTC cadets, JROTC, former SMC or prep school... No one cares what you did before. Comparing one system to another or continually talking about the past will only alienate one and come off badly. Same with a high school bragging about their former life... No one wants to hear it or cares. Your experience will carry you well at USMA, use them to help others, you know how that works.

And I wasn't taking bad about VMI. Most Marines I served with from VMI were great! Although, I did always question why folks would pay sometimes over $40k a year for that abuse! ;)
