Curious if anyone has branch rating intel. Some branches give out Most Preferred rating sparingly, almost a 1:1 ratio, and others more like 6:1. For the branches with the latter description, can the comments indicate the level of most preferred, ie not all MP are created equal? And, can anyone opine on Field Artillery?

DS got his last night. FA is his #1 and the write up he got was fantastic for Most Preferred. Armor was short and sweet "Must Select" and was also Most Preferred. He had another Most Preferred that he was really not into. Many Preferred but we did not talk about them except Infantry and he is not really interested.

My DS had also an amazing write up from FA. Reading the Reddit thread, it doesn’t seem like FA gives out many MP, so hooah for our men! I’m most curious about the comments made for MI. They seem to give out many MP, but DS got several strong comments from them and I’m wondering if that means anything significant.

My DS for most preferred on QM, Ordinance and Finance. He wants to put Finance as his first choice but is under the impression he may get reserves if he does since finance is such a small branch. Has anyone heard that before?

I am not sure but he should put his #1 first if he is most preferred. Just my 2cents. Have him talk to the PMS to get some more educated guidance.

That Finance MP is significant, I think, because I don't think they give out many MP. I'm "old Army," too, so this is all pretty new to me (we just asked for active duty and put branch preferences in, and, IIRC, found out everything at the same time; there were no interviews, branch commandant rankings, etc.), but if Finance is his first choice, and they gave him a MP, I'd recommend he go for it. In the -- I think somewhat unlikely -- event that he didn't get it (which I think would only be triggered by too many cadets above him in the OML with Finance MP asking for Finance #1), then they'd move him to his #2 rather than relegating him to reserves. I'm pretty sure about that, but I guess he should confirm with his PMS to be absolutely sure. What I would NOT do, unless of course this is what he wants, is branch detail with Finance to follow. Because if he does that, then I'd bet that's what he'd get rather than Finance straight off. This is because Finance traditionally branch details a lot of their officers.

Sounds like our sons are somewhat in the same boat. Mine got MP for TC, QM, and Ord (the log branches, which is what he wants), and I recommended he just order them 1, 2, 3 in whatever order he preferred. I hope that's not bad advice, but if you put your MPs 1, 2, 3, and don't get one, then the system doesn't make any sense. . . .

This is coming from a former FA officer (who was MI branch detail, but didn't stick around long enough to get there). Next to Infantry, FA requires the most new lieutenants. But unlike Infantry, FA doesn't seem to have the cache that Infantry does. As a result, IMO and experience, FA is not a very difficult branch to get. That does not take away from the writeup in the slightest. And truth be told, I still think FA is the way to go in combat arms (admittedly biased). Clearly they want your son. Rather, though, unless he wants FA, he might be careful about how high he puts it on his list, particularly because they really want him.

In terms of MI, they detail more than half of their LTs, so IMO it's hard to know whether a strong MP write-up is geared toward someone they want as a LT or, instead, someone they are hoping will put them down with a detail to combat arms/Chem first.

Good to know! My son has been having trouble connecting with his PMS so this is good information. I wonder how the Preferred rating moles? He has a few 2’s. I ask my son these questions but never get a clear answer!

I stand corrected! My DS’s MP is Quarter Master and Ordinance. Finance was P.

Is this from this year? Where'd you get this if you don't mind me asking?
And @franknd, snapped it from Reddit thread. Cdt said his PMS shared it w everyone and it seems to jive w the stuff my DS sent me to help explain how it works. He’s now thinking of MI branch detail AR.

Military acumen assist for parents:

I think you’ll want to go with Ordnance rather than Ordinance - different meanings in the military world. And Quartermaster for Army and Navy and Coast Guard, though the sea service meaning is an enlisted rating skilled in ship’s navigation.

And, hint for future military acumen, you may also see “matériel” or “materiel,” with the accented syllable in a different place, rather than “material” used or mentioned in certain contexts.

DS got MP for EOD which is his #1 choice. Looks like MP is not as sure of a thing this year less slots than the #of MPs. Last year they had 72 MPs and 74 slots. Anyone know how EOD works - it looks like they get either EN, Chem, or OR and then assigned to EOD?

After reading this, my question is the value of a bradso. Does it basically bump someone up from P to MP? Is there any value to a MP candidate who puts an MP branch as #1 in also bradsoing? Basically, what is the value of a bradso?
