Athletics, Academics, Service, and Leadership. Be a well rounded individual!

thank you! do you know if i need to know anything like DoDEBR? I saw some people talk about things that were abbreviated like this but i wasnt sure if this was something that i needed to know

This site will provide good details for you. DoDMERB is the Department of Defense Medical Review Board. As noted by @FutureAcademyDad?, read over all of the details of apply to USCGA as you will find out more about all aspects of the process. I ask all of my students to review the websites as well as start reading about the career you are pursuing through the Coast Guard Academy.

You are probably still too young, but CGA has a summer program called AIM for rising seniors (so you apply the spring of your junior year). It is a week long (there are 3 separate in person week long sessions) and it gives you a good taste of what swab summer would be like. Depending on your location, you could also visit CGA to see the campus and learn more about the Academy itself. In addition to reading over everything on the uscga.edu webpage, find out as much as you can about the Coast Guard mission in addition to just the Coast Guard Academy to be sure it is something you want to do. US Coast Guard Academy has a Facebook page and an Instagram page where they periodically post information. On Facebook, Paul Duddy is a photographer "pduddy pics" who is on campus almost every day so you can see a bit of what cadet life is like through his photos.

If you already know the Coast Guard Academy is for you, your main focus is academics, athletics, and leadership. Service is important as well. Make sure you are taking the highest level STEM classes that you can and that you are doing well. Make sure you are showing leadership which could be through a typical leadership position but could also be through service or other areas. And make sure you are participating in sports/athletics. You can look up the PFE requirements online, but you also just want to be in good physical shape overall. It still may be early, but it never hurts to reach out to the Admissions Officer for your region.

This was super helpful, thank you so much!

Once you are a junior going into your senior year, all service academies look well upon leadership served through Boys and Girls State through the American Legion. My 2c Cadet at USCGA was in Girls State and then voted to represent our state at Girls Nation. She was then appointed to the Naval Academy and USCGA. I think it played a big part in her application standing out.

Also get at least 200 hours of volunteer work during your high school career.

I highly suggest trying to get into AIM. My son wanted to go military since he was 10. He was accepted to AIM and that totally sealed the deal. He had all the right credentials when he applied, but was not accepted on the final round of decisions. He went with his Plan B. All the best to you!

A word of caution: there is no formula for acceptance. You can do everything "perfectly" but still not get your acceptance letter. That said, you can set yourself up for success. Pursue leadership opportunities, prepare yourself physically, and maintain your GPA. Good luck!
