Just purchased "In Peace and War: A History of the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy at Kings Point" by Jeffrey L. Cruikshank. Just reading the intro and chapter 1 were enlightening. As I read on and dive further into the book, all the things I read about concerning the sea year, sea year projects, the trimester system, the curriculum, etc. all begin to make a lot of sense. Very interesting to see how the Academy all came together in the late '30s and early '40s coupled with the explosive growth of the merchant marine during WWII. I recommend this book to anyone who really wants to understand the history of the merchant marine and the Academy along with a look at life as a midshipman and beyond.
