Hi!

I have always heard about colleges/employers Googling applicants, so I have always done everything I can to have a positive internet presence.

I recently Googled myself for the heck of it (I had never done so really seriously), and I noticed that there is a Twitter user with the same name as me (I have a unique name- so it's not like "John Smith" ), and the account is dedicated to promiscuous/illicit activities.

Is there anything I can/should do about this? Should I contact Admissions or Twitter and tell them about this? I am worried that the Academy is going to Google me when I apply and see it and think, since I have an uncommon name, that it is me.

Any ideas?

The articles below may be of interest. I would definitely contact Twitter and see what they suggest.

They may suggest you have a Twitter account such as "realJohnDoe." Donald Trump's is "realDonaldTrump." (not that I follow him, but his tweets are everywhere) You could then have that as part of your signature block on formal emails, link it to your FB, LinkedIn or other social accounts. Take care to tweet responsibly or simply follow people of interest. Build a counterweight.

My Twitter account is on my business card. I don't expect you to have those, but you can build the linkage with other accounts that represent you.
