Got NROTC MO scholarship! But denied school!

Hi Singaporemom!

Things don't seem to be quite as easy for transferring NROTC scholarships this year as they were in the past! The more popular units were full by Oct/Nov, and there are wait lists. I think it would be quite rare right now to be able to transfer NROTC in a week after a rejection from UVA. My child told the Navy he was rejected from his top school in Feb, and even though he has been accepted to five other NROTC schools, Pensacola is saying they won't be moving him off wait lists until May. It is not fun having to be patient at the end of senior year! He worked so hard to get his ROTC application done last July, only to find out that he still won't know anything until May now. Tough on parents too, trying to sort out college financial plans.

It's tough on Pensacola to, having to tell people to wait all over again is no fun at all.

PS - Ebfarrar:

We were told that we could only get on three waitlists - Please let us know if you find out that you can actually do five.

Thanks, P-Flying 17 -

Are the units telling you now which kids on their lists have not been accepted to their schools? Almost every college should know by now if a kid has been accepted or rejected, as almost all decisions were done by April 1. Could the wait lists start moving now for at least some kids at schools where other applicants were not accepted?

My son got his official papers yesterday and they read that requests normally take 5-7 days to process except from April-June which is their peak season. It says please don't try to contact them before 3 weeks but you can check your status online. If your request is denied it says you may request to be put on the waiting list for up to 5 different schools. Then.....if you are contacted about a space you have a limited amount of time to take it so...I understand that to mean that if you are wait listed and your 5th choice opens up in May, then you have to decide to either take it and guarantee your scholarship and be done or take your chances and see if one of your more desired choices opens up later. FUN!! We immediately called schools with rolling admissions to see if they had open spots and applied to them (within reason). It's unfortunate that none of the many Virginia community colleges are satellite schools for UVa because my son would have applied and tried for a transfer next year to UVa and stayed with his unit. All of that to say - I would think that now that April 1 has passed, the shuffling would begin. And it is my understanding that some of the really competitive academic schools don't even fill their units. Also frustrating.

Oh and My son's NROTC scholarship is MO but I wouldn't think that would make any difference on how many schools you could be wait listed on but I am not someone that knows much.

Oh and one more thing - what are the popular units? when I get online everyone thinks theirs is the best. :) Told my son once he got settled he would think that too.

Actually, all units seem to be popular! All of the colleges where my child has been accepted are running wait lists. I hear also that some of the more competitive academic schools have not filled all of their spots in the past. I guess because kids don't get accepted there. After the wait list/transfer shuffle is over, maybe the Navy could move slots from colleges that don't fill their units to colleges that still have wait lists? Hopefully this will all work out for the best, but it's a parent's job to worry, right? GOOD LUCK!

Good luck everybody! Sounds like this year is a touch year for all. I would suggest for the candidate to keep in close contact with your school's ROTC unit. You never know how they rank the kids on the waiting list and who has more say as to which candidate is selected for the unit.

Regarding the question:

which of the NROTC Battalions are the most popular?:

I have read that it goes something like this:

1. the 6 Sr. Military Colleges, as they all have a Corps of Cadets and NROTC: VMI, Norwich , the Citadel, Texas A&M, Viginia Tech, and to a lesser extent North Georgia St. Then there is the University of San Diego Battalion, due to its very large size and access to the assets of the Pacific Fleet.
2. expensive, prestigious Private Colleges in the USNWR top 100 but *not* in the Top 20. (Tulane, USC, Boston College, Boston U, Fordham, George Washington) etc.
3. specialized technical private colleges: e.g. Embry Riddle Aeronautical University
4. Private Colleges in the USNWR Top 20 (e.g. Notre Dame, Vandy, Northwestern, Duke, Rice, MIT, Stanford, Ivies that have NROTC, etc.) These schools tend to have very generous financial aid, and many families can make the finances work without the NROTC scholarship.
5. prestigious State Universities (dollar value of scholarship is much less), e.g. UC Berkeley, UCLA, UVA, UNC, Michigan, Georgia Tech, Penn St, Texas, Florida, U of Washington, etc.
6. not as prestigious State Universities -or- private universities/colleges that are cross-town affiliates of a Host Battalion

North Georgia does NOT have NROTC

So excited about waiting again! At least the NROTC scholarships are starting to ne rearranged unlike other ROTC scholarships I hear.

Good list, DUNNINLA! The "prestigious" state universities can cost as much as the Ivy League when applying from out of state, so I would think that the scholarship value can be just as great as at a private school, depending on where the applicant is a resident.

same boat - received scholarship not accepted at school

My son is in the same boat - placed in a unit at a school he was not accepted to. Absolutely does not want to waste this opportunity. Other schools he was accepted into do not have NROTC units and no cross towns. We need to know more about schools with rolling admissions, how do you search? Just by schools with NROTC MO units and go school by school? Very stressful process!

Yes that is exactly what we have done!! Gone on the NROTC website and clicked on colleges and checked admissions as well as asked if their units are full (although some have said no and others have said they don't know). We have managed to apply to 3 more schools besides one he has asked for transfer to.......very stressful because the waiting starts again. However, a couple of people i have talked to at schools have told me not to worry - the Navy will work with you. Is your son MO or regular Navy?
