Thanks everyone for all the amazing discussion, it's so very helpful, I've been lurking for 18months now. The Forum has generated a good deal of pride & gratitude for all the young people who take on this challenge, serve and the families & friends that support them - hats off to all of you! Our DD is now locked into being a member of the Navy or Coast Guard and wants to start via an academy. DH and I went to a state Maritime Academy (MMA) and wow what a difference 25+yrs and federal level academies makes. Thank you for all the reading and insights it's been so helpful on this journey - Thank you! Working on learning my support roll, like MSC to the Navy ;)

Hello @GoatBoat5 did you sail for the Merchant Marine after graduating MMA?

Hi @Devil Doc - I did a stint in DC with MSC & some fun sea time with them, then stationary IPP 500MW power plant, then overseas with LNG working with the ships but shoreside.

I retired from MSC when the HQ was at the Navy Yard. Such an interesting building. The view from the conference room in the tower (I think that's what we called it) was amazing. I was the Shipboard Medical Programs Manager and HQ senior enlisted until a master chief reported in. I was there two years and for the most part had a good experience.

Hi Devil Doc - I totally forgot to reply to your post 🙃 , just cruising the SAF site for and found I didn't. I was in the Navy Yard as well, I was with the Engineering group and we would sneak up to the top floor of our building - that floor was closed off - we were told that is where they used to align sights that were being manufactured using the Washington Monument as the target...or so we were told. MSC HQ Navy Yard was my first real job - about 2yrs there before I went to the energy sector, love it! I still stay in touch with my first boss and 2 co workers now almost 30yrs later - fabulous folks. Oddly enough one of them has a son who is in USNA class of '26 and has been wonderful over the past 2yrs as my daughter as been working towards her Appointment. We are in full 'Happy Dance' mode now knowing she's a Plebe to be and can't wait to have a photo of the Firstie & Plebe together. Take care and thanks for all the great advice on the SAF!

Thanks for getting back with me. Yes the top floor was made into a nice conference room. I should find out who is now in the building. Congrats to your daughter and your family.
