Hi everyone, I just had a question about reporting residency, I technically have legal residency in 2 different congressional districts and one internationally. Would it be beneficial for me to report my residency as the less competitive of the two districts? or internationally?

What address is used on the tax return that claims you as a dependent?

I agree, your parents can only have one legal residence they use on their annual tax forms. You don't get to 'game' the NOM system by choosing someplace your think is less competitive. (You also have NO idea how many are applying this year, so statistics from the past really mean nothing). Owning a vacation home in another state doesn't change your permanent residence. Going to college out of state (for example) also doesn't make you a resident. I believe there are rules for international applicants regarding NOM's, so that is where I would start.

i see, thank you. That helps alot

My students with divorced parents will sometimes face this 'decision.' I agree that trying to calculate which district is less competitive is often fruitless. Choose one district (if that is applicable to your situation) where one parent votes, pays taxes and lists as their residence. And then stick to it. Good luck with your applications!
