Heading down to VT for Cadet Overnight

Already been to Norwich . Anything as a parent I should look for. Not sure why they would not have tours and info sessions the day after the overnight 26th / 27th . So I'm on my own walking the campus

We actually liked it very much. Vastly different that Rutgers that is a few miles from my home that has 40K students New construction looks good especially if you want Cyber. School felt much larger than I expected Significant Land and a huge mountain that was given to school from the town of Northfield. My Son had a great overnight with the 3 cadets in his host room . My wife ad I spent 1 hr in the cafeteria and 2 seniors came over on their own and spent the next 45 minutes talking with us about NU. Town is only 1 light if that really matters to some. Montpelier is 10 minutes away for Amtrak to NJ or van service to Burlington AP if needed . For us living Central NJ it is cheaper to fly my son if he goes there vs 5-6 hr oneway drive . Oneway from Newark AP was on avg 75$ . Ok back to school we had a very good AROTC info session that went on for almost 2 hours lots of great discussion especially since one of the parents was retied from Special ops command . Was good to see that second only to USMA, NU commissions the most Army Active . If you want Mountain Cold Weather training for summer school there is very good chance you will get it since the guy who ran it was a NU alum and its only 45 minutes away from NU. I liked the fact that they kind of stay in the military lifestyle all 4 years vs what some have told me on the side about VT after year 2. All in all I think the opportunity to get all this training at a SMU that has a smaller number of cadets allows your to maximize the opportunity. I cant forget my DS is here for a specific reason a good education and ensure he presented with significant opportunity to allow him to enter a branch that he wants. Then it is 100% up to him to develop his career

Well VT went well, Massive school 30,000 Corps about 1,100 Its amazing how they all say they place the most Army AD's . One good thing if you did not get scholarship is being able to Join the Virginia Nat Guard to get in state tuition rates and if you get your basic done this summer that another 8K off your bill. But the 9Hr car ride was a bear from NJ So we will see as VT notifies after 5PM March 5th. Good luck to all waiting
 
It is a tough drive from the NJ/NY area. Fortunately there are a lot of VT students from NJ so it's usually possible to share rides back and forth for breaks.
 
so can you give us your impression of VT, please? My DD is very interested in VT and will be doing an overnight with the C of C in April.
 
Considering we looked at Norwich first VT was massive we are not strangers to big schools as we live in walking distance to Rutgers Univ 40,000 . The C of C at VT and Nor about the same size (1,100 )but the % compared to the overall population is huge 3000 vs 30,000. Surrounding town good like any other college town lots of places to eat. Norwich not much until you go to Montpelier

Cadet hall and cadet dorms very new, Cafeterias very good but not cheap, Good National guard option for instate tuition rate for out of students if needed Norwich beats them from a commissioned % standpoint for Army only second to USMA. Cadet tour was limited to walking part of campus, and eating but they are all the same i guess Class, Library, Cafeteria, School history

if you need to fly into Roanoke about 45 minutes away and there is a bus for 4$ to campus. He was set up with Army cadets which was good. My son said it was let strict that Norwich but that could have been the time. At Norwich they group he was with were freshman not recognized as cadets yes. Happened a week later so still strict. At VT they were past that phase so relaxed like Civ clothes after class allowed, TV, etc. In the end it comes down to what student body size I think they want. Dev 1 vs Div 3 Football etc if that's your thing. Cant go wrong in my opinion with VT. Mine is headed to Norwich or at least he said that today All in all it was a very good experience there for my DS

My son is a freshman at VT and he loves it. He just tapped Growley Crew (VTCC mascot handlers), SAA, and SAME.
