Might be a silly question but do you need to keep your DD (or DS) on your health insurance plan while they are at the Academy? Or, do they default to the military plan?

New to all of this, so pardon the "green" question!

No need to keep them on your plan once they in-process. They will be covered under the military plan for medical and dental.

However, we kept our son on our medical and dental plan because the additional cost was insignificant compared to our total premiums. It provided a nice fallback for when he was home or away from the academy (USMA) - used medical once when he came home with strep throat. He kept seeing our dentist during all four years, mainly because since we moved 10 years ago, we found the best dentist I've ever had.

See the Cadet Info booklet link below, see medical Insurance and FAQs in the medical section. Dental and Pharmacy are also covered. When the cadet is traveling or on leave, the military CAC card is his proof of insurance for emergency care.

This was educational for me too - I knew USNA’s Permit To Report packet had to have essentially the same info in a USAFA version, and it was easily found.

New cadets will be covered by TRICARE Prime, the active duty medical plan, but it’s recommended you keep coverage the first year.

We kept coverage for our DS since, as part of a family plan, it was no additional charge. He sees his dentist for cleanings while he is home since USAFA only does one per year. If the insurance is going to cost you significant money; however, it is not needed since they are fully covered by TriCare Prime.

Per the 2024 Appointee Handbook, page 22:
"My child is enrolled as a cadet at the Air Force Academy. Do I need to maintain them on my health insurance plan? It is highly encouraged that you maintain your child as a beneficiary on your health insurance for at least the first year to ensure they are covered in the event they are dis-enrolled or decide to separate on their own."
This also is recommended in case of injury that results in dis-enrollment or medical turn-back.
