Any advice on removing my Plebe from my employer health plan and him only having the military provided insurance? The move would save me $200/month.

On Induction Day, plebes are covered by the active duty TRICARE Prime program. This program also covers dental, vision, hearing, and prescriptions. There are no out-of-pocket costs for anything. Many MIDNs say that they are invincible, because they have Tricare.

Their CAC (common access card) is their proof of insurance:

Some people like having insurance just in case their MIDN gets separated from the academy at some point. This belt-and-suspenders approach never appealed to us here at home because we don't particu;larly like paying for more insurance than we need. It's entirely up to you, but saving the $200 per month for retirement would be my advice.

USNA used to recommend keeping mids on parents’ insurance until graduation in the unlikely event that they get medically separated, however now that Americans can not be denied coverage due to pre-existing conditions I’m not sure that’s still applicable. Personally I would not keep a mid on any additional health insurance (they already have some of the best in the country) but do your research as it’s a highly individual decision IMO.

It’s a personal decision. We chose to wait until the 2/7 was signed. Just in case it wasn’t signed. It happens every year!!

Although, if it was a significant savings, I may choose to do it asap.

dependents are covered til 26...if you choose to cover them.. working in healthcare...Tricare is not the best....especially prescription coverage...But this is if you are off base...on bases I am sure it is very good.

If you dig down deep into the Class of 2024 Permit to Report package, you’ll find the notice where USNA recommends keeping private health insurance in case of separation, and mentions “pre-existing condition.” I think they do this out of an excess of caution. See link below.

Practically speaking, mids get full medical and dental coverage through TRICARE, anywhere, anytime, so there is no need for duplicate coverage.

I do recommend having a conversation with your own healthcare provider to ensure they can be re-added to your plan as a result of an injury or illness that precludes them from serving, or any other reason, at a time outside the annual enrollment period.

May not apply to you, but for others reading, we kept ours on for now since there is another sib still on our insurance. As long as we are paying for family coverage, we might as well cover him, too.

We have had excellent prescription coverage with Tricare!

Mids are active duty and will not pay for any prescriptions, appointments, exams, test, etc. that come through military medicine.

as i have both my sons on my policy, it makes no differencein price if one or both are on it. So i kept him just in case.
