I'm been qualified 3Q but don't make the height and weight, and have 21% body fat (by some online calculators)

I've received an LoA months ago and have received the "West Point will begin tendering most appointments at the end of February2023 and yours will be in the first wave of packets mailed out at that time."

What does this mean for me?

The medical qualification did, or should have, included meeting body fat standards. If you are now over the standard, there is plenty of time to take corrective action.

On R Day you will go through a multitude of screenings, including body fat assessment. If you do not meet the height/weight chart standard, you will be assessed by other means, probably using calipers. You want to meet the standard from the start of R day all the way through graduation. Those close to the standard are unlikely to be sent home, but will garner extra attention such as diet restrictions and continued monitoring, making Plebe year even more of a hassle than it already is.

If you are really concerned, you might consider a more accurate test. Calipers are better than charts or online calculators, but the most accurate body fat measurement is hydrostatic weighing and is now readily available in many areas for a nominal cost. Just google "body fat test your city". For example in Southern California there are mobile sites that go to various fitness centers and perform the test for $49 and offer discounted rates for packages of tests.

So I should still be receiving my appointment to USMA and can slowly cut weight as opposed to a rapid (and unhealthy) cut is what I'm hoping.

Are you male or female? Do you know the body fat percentage allowable in the Army for your gender? You can look it up.

As long as you are 3Q with an LOA and a Nom you will get an appointment.

Looks like you only need to lose a few pounds, but should probably drop a bit more unless there is a reason you need to maintain some extra weight. You want to show up on R day as fit as possible.

American Council on Fitness tables give healthy percentages for male athletes as 6% - 13% and 14% - 17% for generally fit males. Just eating a healthy diet and exercising should get you there. It's generally accepted that losing no more than 1 - 2 pounds per week is a good goal for most people trying to get to a healthy weight.
