Does anyone happen to know if USAFA is sending any cadets to the new(ish) Helo Training Next program after graduation? Is it like ENJJPT, where your performance at USAFA can provide you the opportunity to be selected for that specific training squadron?

This year there were roughly 30 spots that were given to the CO 2023. The program is relatively selective and in order to have a good chance at dropping helos, it might be best to be in the top 15% of your class. The Helo Training Next (HTN) is also backed up like the rest of UPT, so you will not go directly to your training base following graduation. You will more than likely become a casual Lt at FT Rucker or USAFA. I have a friend from the Class of 22' that will head to HTN in September after being on casual status since their graduation (a little over 1 year).

HTN, "Helo Training Next" , does this refer to Pilot Training on Tilt Rotor Fixed Wings, such as the Bell V-280 ? (If AF is getting it....)?
My Son is entering c/o '27, so interested in anything USAFA or AF. Especially if it's something "newish".
Thanks!

Honest question, but what makes helicopters so selective in USAF land? Is it the number of spots outright, the number of people applying vs. spots, or something else? Are there any extra screenings since most USAF helos do CSAR, SOF, nuclear security, and DV evac? Do they even still select people for Hueys?

Here is a good article discussing HTN.
Thanks for enlightening me! My guess above shows my "active imagination".
Does anyone know if the AF will be acquiring the V-280, or similar tilt-rotor/fixed wings? And would pilots likely remain in the Traditional UPT pipeline?

The Air Force is just now getting a it’s newest Pavehawks (HH-60W Jolly Green IIs), so I doubt the V-280 is in the near future for us. And someone correct me if I’m wrong but I believe those who go to fly the Air Force’s current tilt-rotor CV-22B Osprey go to helo training and not UPT

Hueys are still very much working in the AF. The replacement (MH-139A) is still in testing.

Seems like a bit of misinfo in here on how competitive it is. I would say just as competitive as ENJJPT and selected by board as well. There were 15 slots this year and only 10 were allocated by the helo board. The last 5 were left to the superintendent for special circumstance such as a cadet that wanted pilot but cannot fly fixed wing (there are a few medical conditions that can cause that determination, not sure what they are).

Do you know what they might be looking for specifically? And out of the 10 that were selected by the board how many actually got it?

If you’re selected for helicopter training by the board then that will be input by AFPC as your AFSC as long as you continue to be medically cleared.

As for what they are looking for, it’s weighted the same as the ENJJPT board. Not sure if you’re a cadet but if/when you get there the above will make more sense if it does not now.
